WOMEN’S TRACK REIGN AS RUNNER-UP
IN 16TH ANNUAL CAROLINAS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Raleigh, NC – The Shaw
University Women’s Track team scored a total of 178.50
points to secure their title as the 2008 Runner-Up in the 16th
Annual Carolinas Track & Field Conference Championships.
Out of 17 events held on the campus of UNC-Pembroke, Shaw sprinted away with 11 first place finishes. The Lady Bears held first and second in the 100 meter dash as freshman Delilah Badgett (Sharonhill, PA / Liberal Studies) finished first with a time of 12.38 and teammate sophomore Cherell Williams (Miami, FL / Psychology) secured the second place spot with a time of 12.42. Badgett went on to win the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.16. Other first place finishers were freshman Ashley Ligon (Philadelphia, PA / Mathematic) in the 800 meters; freshman Shereka Mitchell (Burlington, NC / Athletic Training) in the 100 meter hurdles and the 400 meter hurdles; Sheniqua Souter (Brooklyn, NY / Elementary Education) in the long jump and javelin; sophomore Joi Briscoe (Baltimore, MD / Biology) in the triple jump, and senior Persis Brown (Spring Lake, NC / Social Work) in the shot put. Also, both the 4 x 100 meters and 4 x 400 meters relay teams finished first. The 4 x 100 meters relay team included Mitchell, Williams, Briscoe, and Badgett who won first place with a time of 47.93. The 4 x 400 meters relay team (composed of Mitchell, junior Khamiya Smith (Sanford, NC / Psychology), Ligon, and freshman Donyelle Murdock (New Orleans, LA / Mass Communications) won first place with a time of 4:12.97.
At the conclusion of the competition, Shaw alumnus and veteran Head Coach William D. Montague was named the Women’s Coach of the Year. Congratulations to Coach Montague and the incredible student-athletes!
