PETERSBURG, VA - One set can make all
the difference in the world. Unfortunately for the Shaw women's tennis
team, they found that out today.
The Lady Bears and Fayetteville State Broncos were tied at
the end of the 2005 CIAA Championships. If their is a tie in points
head-to-head competition against the two schools would determine the
winner. Wouldn't you know it, there was a 4-4 tie in head-to-head
competition. The next tie breaker is the highest percentage of sets won
in head-to-head competition. This is where the Lady Bears fell 8 sets to
seven sets as Fayetteville State prevailed.
It was nonetheless and outstanding tournament for the Lady
Bears. Shaw won five of the nine matches (three singles, two
doubles). Tournament MVP and number one singles Ffion Fletcher defeated
Jennifer Lee of Johnson C. Smith 6-3, 6-3. Number five singles Ayodeji
Ake defeated Arie Bennett of Fayetteville State 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, while number
three singles Tanisha Hall defeated LeJacquelyn Artis of Fayetteville State
6-0, 6-0.
On Wednesday, the number one doubles team of Fletcher and
Victoria Enebechi defeated Fayetteville State's Syscock/Lee in the
championship. In the number two doubles the team of Monique Lawson and
Hall also brought Shaw a doubles championship, defeating the team of Watson/Artis
of Fayetteville State.
