The Shaw women’s tennis team has won 18 of its last 19 matches heading into
the CIAA Championships. This is the
first time in school history that the Lady Bears have won the Eastern Division.
Shaw head coach Sunday Enitan has built a strong program in this his
fifth season. The Lady Bears only
conference loss was to
Fayetteville
State
, which was the first match of the season.
The Lady Bears will certainly be looking to avenge that loss and it may
come down to Shaw and
Fayetteville
State
in the championship.
Ffion Fletcher plays the Lady Bears number one position and is a transfer from
Lincoln (MO). She is 20-0, 16-0 in
the CIAA, and is the Lady Bears strongest player.
Victoria Enebechi is the Lady Bears number two players.
After being named All-CIAA last season, she is 17-3, 14-2 in the CIAA.
Another transfer from Lincoln (MO) is Tanisha Hall.
Hall is the Lady Bears number three player and is 19-1 and 16-0 in the
CIAA. Monique Lawson is the Lady
Bears number four player. The
freshman from
Montego Bay
,
Jamaica
is 18-2, 14-2 in the CIAA, despite being hampered by injuries this season.
At the number five position is Ayodeji Ake.
Ake was named All-CIAA last season and is 16-4 and has gone undefeated
against CIAA competition at 16-0. And
rounding out the Lady Bears, at the number six position is Ronke Oyelade.
She has amassed a 14-6, 15-5 in the CIAA.
“We are looking to win the
championship this season,” said head tennis Coach Sunday Enitan.
“
Fayetteville
State
is a very strong team and have won it three years in a row, so we think that we
may play them in the finals.”
