Five players from the Shaw softball
team were named to the All-CIAA team as voted on by the leagues 12 head
coaches. Felicia Sprattley and Dishondra Goree were named to the first
team, while Shonda Welch and Andrea Blake were named to the second team.
Joia King was named to the rookie team.
Sprattley was named as the shortstop and led the Lady Bears in batting for the
second-straight year with a .413 average. Last year's CIAA Rookie of the
Year has 3 HR and 30 RBI and a slugging percentage of .669. The sophomore
from Halifax, VA struck out only six times this season. She is currently
fourth in the nation in triples and fifth in runs scored per game.
Goree was named as the leftfielder
and had a phenomenal season batting .346 with 12 HR and 39 RBI and had a
slugging percentage of .813. Last year's All-CIAA performer is currently
ranked 14th in the country in homeruns per game.
Welch was named as a pitcher and
was the workhorse for the Lady Bears. The Halifax, VA native was 12-8 on
the season with and ERA of 3.20. She had 117 strikeouts in 129.0 innings
pitched.
Blake had a breakout season and was
big for the Lady Bears in the CIAA Tournament. The junior from
Summerville, SC was second on the team in batting (.387) and drove in 32 runs
while scoring 35.
King had a solid freshman campaign
and played second base as well as outfield for the Lady Bears. The
Clarkston, MS native batted .292 and started 38 games. She drove in 16
runs and scored 23.
