The Shaw softball team is on a roll.
The Lady Bears won both games of a
doubleheader defeating Bowie State 8-0 and 7-2 at Sanderford Road Park.
The Lady Bears have now won 10-straight games.
The story in game one was the pitching of
Shonda Welch (5-5). Welch gave up only one hit, walked three while striking out
nine. The Lady Bulldogs lone hit
of the game came on a Staci Walls single in the third inning.
The Lady Bears jumped out early scoring six runs in the first on only
one hit. Starter Courtney Walls
gave up seven walks in the inning. Felicia
Sprattley went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI for the game.
Game two was much closer as Bowie State
jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a Felicia Smith single, which scored
Staci Walls. The Lady Bears (11-12, 11-1) would even the score in their
half of the first as Branda Best’s groundout scored Sprattley tying the game
at 1-1. Kimberly Hutchinson’s
single in the top of the second scored Latoya Hopkins giving the Lady Bulldogs
the 2-1 lead. A Dishondra Goree
homerun blast to left center in the bottom of the second tied the game at 2-2.
Sprattley (6-4) would not allow another run the rest of the game getting
the complete game victory. Best’s
double which scored Welch in the bottom of the third proved to be the
game-winning RBI. Sprattley helped
her cause at the plate finishing 2-for-3 with two runs batted in, two runs
scored and two triples. Tanesha
Haynes and Joi King also had two hits a-piece.
The Lady Bears will host Virginia State on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at Sanderford
Road Park in a re-match of last year's CIAA Championship game.
