WINGATE - The Shaw women's basketball team picked up their 10th win of the season with an 89-65 win over Wingate in Cuddy Arena.  This was the Lady Bears fourth game in the past five days.

The number five team in the WBCA/NCAA Division II top 25 poll, Shaw improves to 10-1 overall. Wingate falls to 6-6 overall. 

Shaw senior guard Kiarsha Curtis led all scorers with 21 points. All total, four Bears hit double digits. Bear senior forward Joy Hairston had 15 points, while senior guard Jessica Hawkins contributed 13 points and team-high totals of eight rebounds and eight steals. Shaw senior forward Bilisa Perkins chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.

Wingate sophomore guard Tanetra Barrett had 17 points, six assists and five rebounds for the hosts.  She was the only Bulldog to reach double figures.

The tenacious Shaw defense forced Wingate into 30 turnovers. The Lady Bears recorded 24 steals. Hawkins had eight steals, while Curtis notched five thefts. Shaw led 46-25 at intermission. Wingate would get no closer than 20 in the second half.

The Bears led 77-48 on a three-point field goal by Perkins with 6:08 to play in the second half. The 29-point bulge was Shaw’s largest lead of the night. The Bears hit nine three-point field goals on the evening, including three each by Curtis and Perkins.

In the first half, Shaw bolted to a 21-10 lead on a lay-up by junior guard Nastassia Boucicault with 9:29 remaining. The Bears shot 45.9 percent (17-of-37) in the opening frame.

All eight Bear players who played in the first half found the scoring column. A free throw by Curtis put Shaw up 46-25 at halftime, the largest first half lead for the Bears.
