DURHAM - The fifth-ranked Shaw women's basketball
team proved to be too tough for North Carolina Central as the Lady Bears handed
the Lady Eagles an 89-69 loss at McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium.
Shaw (12-1, 2-0 CIAA) posted four Lady Bears with double-figures
in the scoring column, powered by Kiarsha Curtis with 25 points on 10-of-18
shooting from the floor, including 3-of-5 from long range. Nastassia Boucicault
collected a balanced 14 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and 10 steals for
the Lady Bears, while Jessica Hawkins contributed 12 points and Joy Hairston
added 10 points off the bench.
NCCU sophomore Cassie King netted 25 points on 11-of-25 shooting, while adding
a game-high nine rebounds in the loss. Junior center Shante' Collins scored 11
points for the Lady Eagles (4-10, 1-3 CIAA).
NCCU held a 9-5 lead early, following a three-pointer by rookie Karla Gamble at
the 16:44 mark, but it was all Shaw the rest of the night.
The Lady Bears took a 47-29 cushion into the locker room, and led by as many as
30 points in the second half before settling for a 20-point margin of victory.
Shaw heads to Bowie State for a clash with the Lady Bulldogs on Saturday at
5:30 p.m.
