The third-ranked Shaw women's basketball team used an 18-8
second half run to turn an 11-point halftime lead into a 106-70 victory over
Fayetteville State at Spaulding Gymnasium. Shaw has now won 44-straight
games over CIAA opponents and extended its overall winning streak to 11
games. Joy Hairston led six Lady Bears who scored in double figures with
23 points on 8-of-12 shooting, enhancing her chances for being named CIAA
Player of the Week for the second time this season.
With the score tied at 24-24 Fayetteville State (8-7, 5-2) took the lead 27-24
on three-pointer by Kelly Reid with 8 minutes, 48 seconds remaining in
the first half. The Lady Broncos took their biggest lead of the game
34-26 on a jumper by Angela Perry with 6:07 remaining in the half. Shaw
(18-1, 7-0) used a 14-4 run over the next three minutes and took the lead
42-40, a lead the would never relinquish, on a lay-up by Jenna Bradford with
3:07 remaining in the half. Shaw led 49-38 at halftime.
Nastassia Boucicault helped to fuel the 18-8 run to open the
second half as she had two points three assists and two steals. She
finished the game with 13 points and 10 assists. The Lady Bears shot 58
percent from the field in the second half, finishing the game shooting 52
percent from the field. Freshman Leslee Anderson had a season-high 20
points and Jessica Hawkins recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12
assists. Shaw limited Fayetteville State to 35 percent shooting and
forced 22 turnovers. Tokisha Burton led four Lady Broncos who scored in
double figures with 19 points.
Shaw will play at Lvingstone on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
