The fifth-ranked Shaw women's basketball team opened CIAA play with a 112-62 victory over Elizabeth City State at Spaulding Gymnasium.

The Lady Bears (11-1, 1-0, 1-0)  jumped out to an early 8-2 lead on a jumper by Jenna Bradford with 17 minutes 18 seconds remaining in the first half.  Elizabeth City State (3-7, 0-2, 0-1) cut its deficit to 19-13 on a lay-up by Christina Hager with 11:38 remaining in the first half.  A three-pointer by Kiarsha Curtis at the 10:20 mark put Shaw ahead 22-13 and started a 21-9 run by the Lady Bears over the next six minutes 10 seconds.  Jessica Hawkins' three-point play, doubled Shaw's lead at 44-22.  The Lady Bears led 59-29 at halftime.
 
Shaw shot 49 percent from the field and never trailed.  They forced the Lady Vikings into 39 turnovers.   Joy Hairston led the Lady Bears with 24 points and 11 rebounds.  Curtis added 23.  Celeste Trahan led the Lady Vikings with 23 points.
 
Shaw will next play at North Carolina Central on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
