Nastassia Boucicault led five players who
scored in double figures with 25 points as the fifth-ranked Shaw women’s
basketball team rolled past Lenoir-Rhyne 99-56 at Spaulding Gymnasium.
It was a close game in beginning as neither team led by more than four points.
Ahead 17-16 midway through the first half, Lenoir-Rhyne’s scoring
threat Crystal Clary went down with an injury after scoring seven points.
From that point, Shaw (9-1) used a 13-2 run to take 29-19 lead on a
lay-up by Jessica Hawkins with five minutes, 39 seconds remaining in the first
half. Lenoir-Rhyne (6-6) then went
on a scoring drought of five minutes 34 seconds and Shaw closed the half out
with a 25-2 run, including a three-pointer at the buzzer by Joy Hairston, to
take a 54-21-halftime lead.
The Lady Bears continued their assault
going up by as much as 46 points. Shaw
forced the Bears into 41 turnovers, while assisting on 22 of 40 field goals.
Kiarsha Curtis poured in 16 points, while Hawkins just missed a triple
double, finishing with 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.
Jenna Bradford and Leslee Anderson had 10 points a-piece.
Kristin Barringer and Katrina Andrews led Lenoir-Rhyne with eight points
a-piece.
The
Lady Bears open up CIAA play next Tuesday as they host Elizabeth City State at
5:30 p.m. at Spaulding Gymnasium.
