Nassau, Bahamas, January 2 - The fifth-ranked Shaw women's basketball team fell to defending national champion California of Pennsylvania 60-48 in the Goombay Shootout. 

California (8-2) jumped out to a 9-0 lead as Sara McKinney, who finished with game highs of 20 points and 19 rebounds, scored the first and last baskets during the run, the last with 17 minutes, 20 seconds remaining in the first half.  California extended its lead to 24-12 on a three-pointer by Megan Storck with 7:20 remaining in the half.  The Lady Bears closed the half out with a 12-6 run as Joy Hairston's two free throws with 1:12 remaining cut the Lady Bears halftime deficit to 30-24.
 
California opened the second half on a 10-0 run over a three-minute span as McKinney's lay-up with 16:41 remaining gave California a 40-24.  The Lady Bears fell down by as much as 18 points, but pulled to within eight points at 56-48 on a lay-up by Joy Hairston with 2:48 remaining.  But that's as close as the Lady Bears would come as they shot a season low 26 percent from the field.
 
Hairston led Shaw with 17 points, while Nastassia Boucicault chipped in 13.  Storck was also in double figures for California with 15 points.  Shaw will play in Monday's consolation game.
