DEFEATS WINGATE TO REPEAT AS REGIONAL CHAMPIONS
RALEIGH, NC – Shaw
University defended its regional title by
defeating Wingate University 68-57 in the
championship game of the 2006 NCAA Division II
South Atlantic Regional playoffs in Raleigh,
N.C. on Monday night.
Senior sharp-shooter Carletta Harrell drained
five three-pointers for 15 points to spark the
Lady Bears to their 26th consecutive
victory of the season and 51st
straight win inside Spaulding Gymnasium.

TITLE GAME

five Lady Bears score double figures during an
80-65 victory over conference foe North Carolina
Central University in the semifinals of the NCAA
Division II South Atlantic Region playoffs
inside Spaulding Gymnasium in Raleigh, N.C.

Byer’s heroics key Wingate over Clayton
State
RALEIGH, NC – Kate
Edwards was the unsung hero for Wingate Friday.
On Saturday, the hero was Lakin Byer.
Lakin Byer scored two points but they decided
the outcome between No. 2 seed Wingate and No. 3
seed Clayton State in the NCAA Division II South
Atlantic Regional semifinals.
Byer hit two free throws with four seconds left
after grabbing a key offensive rebound and then
blocked the potential game-tying shot to give
Wingate a 67-64 victory Saturday at Shaw
University’s Spaulding Gym.

#2 Wingate downs #7 USC Upstate behind
Edwards’ 17 points
RALEIGH, NC –
Kate Edwards picked the right time to step up
for Wingate.
Edwards, a sophomore guard, came off the bench
to score a team-high 17 points in Wingate’s
67-59 victory over USC Upstate in the first
round of the NCAA women’s Division II South
Atlantic Regional at Shaw University.

Dennis Cox wanted his team to make an early
statement and the Lady Lakers did just that in a
76-52 rout of Johnson C. Smith Friday in a
first-round NCAA Division II South Atlantic
Regional basketball game at Shaw University.

OFF #8NEWBERRY TO REACH REGIONAL SEMIFINALS
RALEIGH, NC
– The first-round
basketball contest between top-seeded Shaw and
No. 8 Newberry went down the wire but the Lady
Bears made the key plays at the end. The result
was a 53-50 victory Friday before the home fans
at Shaw’s Spaulding Gym. The win sent the Lady
Bears (27-4 overall) to today’s semifinals and
eliminated Newberry (18-13) from the NCAA
Division II South Atlantic Regional.

NCAA SOUTH ATLANTIC REGION GAME TIMES SET
Raleigh, NC – Game
start times and ticket prices have been set for
the upcoming NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball
South Atlantic Region Tournament at Shaw
University’s C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. The
tournament first round will tip-off on Friday,
March 10, followed by the semi-finals on
Saturday, March 11 and the championship on
Monday, March 13. General admission tickets are
$10 Adults and $3 for students with a valid ID
for each session.
