SHAW victorious over lady vikings  
Lady Bears Tab Tenth CIAA Triumph

February  2, 2008Raleigh, NC – The Shaw University Lady Bears played hosts to the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City. The Lady Bears scored 42 points in the paint and led by as many as 19 points to down the Lady Vikings 89 – 77. The win now possess a three game winning streak as Shaw’s record now stands at 13 – 10 Overall, 10 – 2 CIAA, and 4 – 2 Division.

The Lady Bears forced their opponents to take their first timeout within the first five minutes of play after the greeted ECSU with an opening 8 – 4 run. The Lady Vikings voyaged back to knot the contest 8 – 8 with a long distance two pointer by #20 Cheniece Arthur. Shaw speedily snatched back their lead with back to back three-pointers, one by #21 NaKeisha “Hoop Queen” Anthony (Guard / Forward / 5 – 10 / Senior / Charlotte, NC) and the other by #25 Jamie “Guru” Goshen (Guard / 6 – 0 / Senior / Chesapeake, VA). The game was tied for the second time after two made free throws by #00 Celeste Trahan at the 10:43 mark. It did not last but only seconds as Goshen buried a three-pointer and jumper to give the Lady Bears a 20 – 15 lead. As time quickly progressed, Shaw seemed to only fluster and flabbergast their opponents as a nothing but net three-pointer by #33 Celanese “Sharp Shooter” Bozeman (Guard / 5 – 9 / Junior / Hampton, VA) allowed the home team to hail to a 26 – 16 lead. The Lady Vikings opted to take their second thirty second timeout. ECSU’s offensive vehicle began to accumulate acceleration, but it was too late as they Lady Bears motioned in full stride. Shaw’s #5 Shana “Showtime” Andrus (Guard / 6 – 0 / Junior / Akron, OH) capped the 14 – 6 scoring spurt with an “in your face” post production and then she followed up with a steal only to finish with the fast break lay-up. The Lady Vikings rushed to their sideline as they called for their first full timeout as Shaw led 40 – 22 with 3:33 remaining. Shaw slid into halftime leading 44 – 32.

The Lady Vikings struck first at the start of the second half with a three-pointer by #1 Joyce Freeman. Shaw’s #34 Nicky “Superwoman” Souter (Forward / Center / 6 – 0 / Senior / Brooklyn, NY) responded with her fourth basket of the game. Another deep drain by Freeman and two scores from Trahan severed Shaw’s double digit lead to nine, 49 – 40. The Lady Vikings pulled within two, 49 – 47 Shaw, with a made jumper by Arthur and yet another three-pointer by Freeman. Shaw stretched their lead back to nine with three consecutive three-pointers by Bozeman, 58 – 49. ECSU made good of two consecutive offensive possessions, but the Lady Vikings’ attempt to comeback was once again pierced by none other than by fiery finger-tips of Bozeman as she sunk her fourth three-pointer. The Lady Bears maintained their lead as with 3:33 left; Shaw stomped out in the forefront 79 – 69. In the closing seconds, Shaw made multiple conversions at the charity stripe to secure the success.  

The Lady Bears had five players to finish in double figures. For the second time in the season, leading all scores was #33 Celanese Bozeman with 22 points (one rebound / three assists / three steals). Providing additional scoring was #5 Shana Andrus with 17 points (five rebounds / seven assists / three steals), #3 Tanisha McGaughey (Guard / 5 – 11 / Sophomore / Norfolk, VA) with 16 points (six rebounds / seven assists / two steals), #34 Nicky Souter with 12 points (a team high 14 rebounds / one assist / five steals), and #25 Jamie Goshen with 10 points (two rebounds ).

The Shaw University Lady Bears will travel to Lawrenceville, VA to take on the Saint Paul’s College Lady Tigers on Tuesday, February 5, 2008. The CIAA match-up is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
