    Shaw Upset by JCSU

November 20, 2007Charlotte, NC – The #13 Shaw University Lady Bears bussed to Brayboy Gymnasium for their CIAA contest against Western Division foe, Johnson C. Smith University Lady Golden Bulls. The Lady Bears marched in the forefront with the lead for a majority of the game. Unfortunately, a late second half momentum shift in favor of JCSU led to Shaw losing its first regular season road game, 48 – 47.

Shaw’s offense sputtered to gain momentum as they misfired several shots at the start of the game. Almost four minutes elapsed off of the game clock at the beginning of the first quarter before Shaw tallied its first points to the scoreboard. The first successful two point bucket was the result of a fast break passing drill from #11 Jessica Davis (Guard / 5 – 2 / Junior / Cleveland, OH) to #52 KeyAuna Jenkins (Center / 6 – 1 / Freshman / Cleveland, OH) back to Davis for the lay-up. Nevertheless, the Lady Bears quickly turned on their high heat to defrost their frost bitten engines. The Lady Bears pressed on the gas pedal of their offensive engine to speed to a 13 – 5 lead. Shaw’s scoring spurt seemed to be a screen play that was written, directed, and produced by #25 Jamie Goshen (Guard / 6 – 0 / Senior / Chesapeake, VA).  Goshen dialed long distance from deep to drain a three-pointer, caught a quick pass from co-host #21 NaKeisha Anthony (Guard / 5 – 11 / Senior / Charlotte, NC) to knock down a mid-range jumper, and hustled up the hardwood to grab an offensive rebound before tossing it in the hoop for the “Grammy nominated” putback. Shaw entered the intermission with a seven point margin advantage, 21 – 14.

Despite Anthony initiating the second half of play and wowing her teammates as well as her hometown supporters with a three-pointer,  the Lady Golden Bulls bulldozed back to bogard their first lead of the game, 41 – 37 with seven minutes remaining in the game.  JCSU’s Center #40 Demetria Bell was largely responsible as she connected on back-to-back-to-back-to-back baskets.  Shaw snatched back the lead (42 – 41) with a converted turnover into two points by Anthony and another three-pointer by two-sport athlete Goshen. JCSU reclaimed the lead 48 – 44, but Shaw trailed by one point after Jenkins scored two and then Anthony swished one of two free throws (48 – 47 JCSU). Anthony took possession of a steal and drove the length of the court with nine seconds left in the game. Then, the dish to Goshen was knocked out –of-bounds with only three seconds remaining. After three full timeouts taken, Shaw was unable to sink their attempted last second shot.

Leading in scoring for the Shaw University Lady Bears was #25 Jamie Goshen with a tied game high 17 points, three rebounds, one steal, and one assist. Lady Bear #21 NaKeisha Anthony collected a double double scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. In addition, Anthony collected three steals, one block, and two assists.

The Shaw University Lady Bears (3-1 Overall, 1-1 CIAA) will return to Raleigh as they prepare for their out-of-conference contest against University of Charleston on Monday, November 26, 2007. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
