Shaw topples lady tigers
Lady Bears On Flaming Four Game Winning Streak

February 5, 2008Lawrenceville, VA – The Shaw University Bears visited the Lady Tigers of Saint Paul’s College. Shaw stole a home court upset from Saint Paul’s, 72 – 57. The Lady Bears record now stands at 14 – 10 Overall, 11– 2 CIAA, and 4 – 2 Division.

Shaw struck SPC with an 11 – 0 scoring run at the beginning of the first half. The Lady Bears flushed in 14 of 35 field goal attempts. Their 40.0% field goal percentage was largely due to Shaw’s scorching 50% (five of 10) accumulated from three-point territory.  The Lady Bears defensively dominated with “pickle jar tight” pressure to force their opponents to be successful on 10 of 34  (29.4%) attempted field goals; which included SPC only sinking one of 12 attempted three-pointers (8.3%). It was not until after taking a thirty second timeout that #11 Alicia Brown banked in the Lady Tigers’ first successful field goal at the 16:49 mark. Nevertheless, Shaw stomped to a 16 – 8 lead after #33 Celanese “Sharp Shooter” Bozeman (Guard / 5 – 9 / Junior / Hampton, VA) drained her second three-pointer and #21 NaKeisha “Hoop Queen” Anthony (Guard / Forward / Senior / Charlotte, NC) made her first basket. Virtually unstoppable, the Lady Bears bolted further out of reach with a 9 – 0 scoring run. Shaw led 25 – 10 as SPC took their second thirty second timeout at the 10:33 mark. After the short breather, #11 Jessica “The Answer” Davis danced ahead of the opposing defense to loft in a hook shot lay-up. As for SPC, the Lady Tigers still seemed to operate as a one “woman” offense as Brown tallied her third field goal. Suddenly a flip flop occurred as Shaw’s sun burning offense began to cool off and SPC’s slow-to-start offensive vehicle mustered up momentum. Fortunately, the Lady Bears re-lit their offensive flame and cornered SPC to take their first full timeout at 3:06 after Bozeman buried her third three-pointer and then followed with a fast break lay-up. Shaw held a 37 – 24 point advantage at halftime.

At the start of the second half, Shaw caged the Lady Tigers with a 13 – 6 scoring run during the first seven minutes of play. Head Coach Jacques Curtis called for his first timeout as his Lady Bears led 50 – 30. However, in the next four minutes, the SPC sucker-punched Shaw with their own 13 – 6 scoring spurt; which chopped their deficit to 56 – 43. The Lady Bears refocused their offensive prospective to step back out in front for a considerable lead. For the remainder of the half, Shaw supplied SPC with restricted breathing room as the Lady Tigers only tallied two of eight three-point attempts (25%). In addition, Shaw scored 17 points off of 16 forced turnovers.

Leading the Bears in scoring was #33 Celanese Bozeman with 19 points (one assist). In addition, Shaw’s #3 Tanisha McGaughey (Guard / 5 – 11 / Sophomore / Norfolk, VA) finished with double double as she scored 18 points and took possession of a season high 10 rebounds.

The Shaw University Bears will bus to Bowie, MD to take on the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University on Saturday, February 9, 2008. The CIAA match-up is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
