SHAW STIR-FRY LADY FALCONS
Lady Bears Snatch Sixth Straight CIAA Season Success

January 19, 2007Raleigh, NC – The Shaw University Lady Bears bussed to Broughton High School for their second season athletic dispute with the Lady Falcons of Saint Augustine’s College. Shaw terrorized their cross-town rivals to score 31 points off of 24 forced turnovers, outrebounded SAC 50 – 34, and lead by as many as 22 points. The Lady Bears add on another triumph to their now four game winning streak as they defeated St. Augustine’s, 73 – 59.

The Lady Bears took possession of the tip-off and quickly tallied their first three points to the scoreboard after #3 Tanisha “Make It Rain” McGaughey (Guard / 5 – 11 / Sophomore / Norfolk, VA) successfully released a rainbow from behind the arc. Two possession later, McGaughey pumped fake the Lady Falcon defense only to dish to #50 Tavia Clemendor (Center / 6 – 0 / Senior / Danville, VA) for the lay-up. Shaw skied to a 7 – 2 lead after Clemendor danced past her defender with an impressive up and under move. Then, subbed in #21 NaKeisha “All Day” Anthony (Guard / Forward / 5 – 11 / Senior / Charlotte, NC) promptly made her presence known as she connected on two consecutive offensive possessions to aide Shaw with a nine point lead. SAC tacked on two made baskets, but Shaw still held a double digit lead, 17 – 6, after a top of the key three-pointer by #33 Celanese Bozeman (Guard / 5 – 9 / Junior / Hampton, VA). With a little less than three minutes remaining in the first half, Shaw plumped up their point margin advantage to 15 points, 28 – 13, with Bozeman’s second made three-pointer. The home team’s first year head coach LaTanya Collins arose from the bench to request a thirty second timeout. Just prior to the end of the half, Bozeman pick-pocketed her opponent for a steal and then rocketed an assist to #2 Jessica “The Answer” Davis (Guard / 5 – 2 / Junior / Cleveland, OH) for the fast break conversion. Davis sunk her free throw after she was fouled on the play. The Lady Bears led 33 – 18 at halftime.

Shaw initiated the second half with a 6 – 0 scoring spurt. Then, #25 Jamie “Go-To-Guru” Goshen (Guard / 6 – 0 / Senior / Chesapeake, VA) froze the SAC defense with a quick jumper as the Lady Bears led 41 – 20. The Lady Falcons began to muster up offense as a bucket here and a jumper there portrayed them not so much as threatening to take the lead, but more of redirecting the hand of momentum. After Shaw converted on a fast break possession, Head Coach Jacques Curtis called for a timeout. The Lady Bears progressed into the final ten minutes of the game with a commanding 53 – 33 lead. However, in the next three minutes, the Lady Flocks would squawk on a 10 – 0 scoring spurt. SAC severely split their point deficit as at the 3:16 mark, back to back baskets by out-of-state freshman #33 Whitney Griffis and a three point conversion by forward #3 Chanel Kinard escorted the Lady Falcons to within nine, 62 – 53 Shaw. Nevertheless, the Lady Bears would quickly refuel their offensive engines to secure the win with fast break buckets and made free-throws down the stretch.

The Lady Bears had three student-athletes to finish in double figures. Leading Shaw in scoring was #21 NaKeisha Anthony with a game high 23 points (nine rebounds / two assists / one steal). Providing additional scoring was #33 Celanese Bozeman with 11 points (one assist / two steals) and #3 Tanisha McGaughey with 10 points (four rebounds / six assists / four steals). Queen of rebounding was a two-way tie between #34 Nicky Souter (Forward / Center / 6 – 1 / Senior / Brooklyn, NY) and Anthony as they each accumulated a game high nine rebounds each.

The Shaw University Lady Bears prepare to host three conference games in the next seven days. The first CIAA matchup will be on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 against the Saint Paul’s College Lady Tigers. The home contest is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
