Lady Bears Levitate to Sixteenth Season Success
February 14, 2008 – Fayetteville, NC – The Shaw University Lady Bears fled to the campus of Fayetteville State University to battle the Lady Broncos. Shaw certainly supplied the icing to their Valentine’s Day as they stole a home court upset over the Lady Broncos, 90 – 78. The Lady Bears record now stands at 16 – 11 Overall, 13 – 3 CIAA, and 5 – 2 Division.
The first half of play contest was tied eight times as possession of the lead altered on ten different occasions. The Lady Bears buried 14 of their 29 attempted field goals (48.3%); including tallying three of seven attempted three-pointers (42.0%). Two of those behind the arc baskets were dialed in at the start of the game by #33 Celanese “Sharp Shooter” Bozeman (Guard / 5 – 9 / Junior / Hampton, VA). The Lady Broncos broke out into the open for a 9 – 6 lead after 6 – 0 scoring run. The Lady Bears tip-toed within two, 11 – 9, with a made free throw by #34 Nicky “Superwoman” Souter (Forward / 6 – 1 / Senior / Brooklyn, NY) and a jumper by #11 Shana “Showtime” Andrus (Guard / 6 – 0 / Junior / Akron, OH). However, FSU flourished to their largest lead of seven points, 17 – 10, with three unanswered scores. After a fistful of ties, the Lady Bears reappeared in the forefront with a 7 – 3 scoring run in the final two minutes. Shaw led 38 – 37 with sixteen seconds remaining in the half. FSU’s freshman center #51 Tiffany Haywood lofted in a lay-up just as the buzzer blared off. The competition was tied 39 – 39 at the break.
At the start
of the second half, both competitors continued their head turning “shot for
shot” shootout. After five minutes of play, the score was dead-bolted at 47
– 47. Then, the Lady Bears unloosened the knot to slip out in front, 53 –
47, with two made free throws by #11 Shana “Showtime” Andrus (Guard / 6 –
0 / Junior / Akron, OH) and a fast break two plus made free throw by
#2 Jessica “The Answer” Davis (Guard / 5 – 2 / Junior / Cleveland, OH).
Shaw stood strong with their first double digit point lead, 64 – 54, after
#5 Jan’el Baxter (Guard / 6 – 0 / Sophomore / Raleigh, NC) snatched a
FSU intended assist and then bolted a bounce pass to Davis for the delayed
lay-up. The Lady Broncos increased their success from the field, but Shaw
still held the hotter hand. The Lady Bears consistent flow of offense forced
FSU to take a thirty second timeout at the 6:29 mark as Shaw led 72 – 62.
Two minutes later, the home team requested a sixty second breather increased
their lead to 12 points, 78 – 66. For the remainder of the game, Shaw
secured their considerably large lead with a plethora of post and fast break
productions.
The Lady Bears had scholar-athletes to finish in double figures. Leading the
Lady Bears was #2 Jessica Davis as she scored 13 of her 15 points
(seven rebounds / one assist / one block / one steal). Providing additional
scoring was #11 Shana Andrus as she scored 10 of her 14 points (four
rebounds / two assists / three steals), #33 Celanese Bozeman with 13
points (one rebound / one assist / two steals), #25 Jamie Goshen (Guard /
6 – 0 / Senior / Chesapeake, VA) with 13 points (three rebounds / one
assist), and #21 NaKeisha Anthony (Guard / 5 – 11 / Senior / Charlotte,
NC) with 12 points (six rebounds / two assists / two steals). Leading
Shaw in rebounding was #3 Tanisha McGaughey (Guard / 5 – 11 / Freshman /
Norfolk, VA) with a game high nine rebounds (six points / six assists /
four steals).
The Shaw University Lady Bears and Johnson C. Smith University Lady Golden Bulls will be featured as the star studded cast on Saturday, February 16th as the NCAA’s Division II Game of the Week. The nationally televised mid-day matinee is scheduled to start at 12:00 Noon at Broughton High School's Holliday Gymnasium.
