Lady Bears Hampered in Hawaii
by Arctic Field Goal Shooting
December 17 - 18, 2007 – Honolulu, Hawaii – The #23 Shaw University Lady Bears propelled through air pockets and a cluster of clouds to contend in the Hoop – N – Surf Classic. Unfortunately, the Lady Bears came up short on both days as they were eliminated by #14 Emporia State University 93 – 86 on day one and 75 – 52 by Truman State University on day two. The Lady Bears’ record now stands at 5 – 6 Overall, 1 – 1 CIAA.
On their first day of competition, the Lady Bears looked to start off on the right foot with a win against ESU. The task seemed to be easier said than done as although Shaw sunk 50% more shots than their opponents, the Lady Bears stood in the shadows of ESU with an arctic 33.3% field goal percentage (30 made of 90 attempted field goals). Furthermore, Shaw’s strenuous uphill battle including the Lady Bears only able to make four of 21 attempted three-point field goals (19%). On the contrast, Shaw out rebounded ESU 46 – 45 and fueled their fight by forcing 29 turnovers. Shaw threatened to take the lead late in the first half when #3 Tanisha McGaughey (Guard / 5 – 11 / Freshman / Norfolk, VA) tickled the twine with a behind the arc basket to tie the score 22 – 22 at the 8:10 mark. Nevertheless, ESU escalated out of the intermission to rebuild a more than comfortable cushion and cancel all comeback chances submitted by Shaw. Despite the setback, Shaw had three Lady Bears to finish in double figures. The premier offensive player was #21 NaKeisha Anthony (Guard / Forward / 5 - 10 / Senior / Charlotte, NC) as she scored 24 points (eight rebounds / two assists / one steal). The other two scholar-athletes to accumulate double figures were #3 Tanisha McGaughey as she scored 21 points (six rebounds / one assist / one steal) and #25 Jamie Goshen (Forward / 6 - 0 / Senior / Chesapeake, VA) as she scored 16 points (two rebounds / one assist / one steal).
On day two, the Lady Bears were focused on concluding competition with a more positive result. Sadly, Shaw still suffered from frosty finger-tips as they composed a freezing 34.7% (25 of 72); including missing all four three-point attempts. The Lady Bears applied stifling defensive pressure to produce 16 steals which served as a stem in Shaw trapping TSU into committing a total of 29 turnovers. Shaw cut their point deficit to as little as six points, 34 – 28 TSU, when in the first half, #25 Jamie Goshen (Forward / 6 – 0 / Senior / Chesapeake, VA) dissected TSU’s defense to convert on three consecutive lay-up in the final seven minutes. After the break, Shaw’s defense was diluted with streaky scoring spurts by their opponents as TSU tip-toed away and to lengthen their lead by as many as 29 points. Shaw’s top scorer was #3 Tanisha McGaughey (Guard / 5 – 11 / Freshman / Norfolk, VA) as she scored 12 points (five rebounds / two assists / three steals). Providing additional scoring was #25 Jamie Goshen (two rebounds / one assist), #21 NaKeisha Anthony (Guard/ Forward / 5 – 10 / Senior / Charlotte, NC) (four rebounds / two assists / one steal), and #34 Nicky Souter (Forward / Center / 6 – 0 / Senior / Brooklyn, NY) (three steals) as they each scored eight points. Souter was only two points shy of tallying a double double as she took possession of a game- high 11 rebounds.
