Lady Bears Jail JCSU in National Spotlight Showdown
February 16, 2008 – Wake County, NC – The Shaw University Lady Bears suited up before a physical and national television audience against the Johnson C. Smith University Lady Golden Bulls as a featured NCAA Division II Game of the Week. Shaw snapped JCSU’s six game winning streak and extended their win streak to three as they beat the Lady Golden Bulls, 65 – 54. Furthermore, the triumph treats Shaw to clinching the Western Division and eradicating the four game losing streak the Lady Bears have against JCSU. The Lady Bears record now stands at 17 – 11 Overall, 14 – 3 CIAA, and 6 – 2 Division.
The Lady
Golden Bulls took an early 3 – 2 lead with a made free throw and basket by
sophomore forward #40 Demetria Bell. However, Shaw snatched their first
lead, 9 – 3, with back to back three-pointers by #33 Celanese “Sharp
Shooter” Bozeman (Guard / Junior / 5 – 9 / Hampton, VA) and a second
made two-pointer by #11 Shana “Showtime” Andrus (Guard / 6 – 0 / Junior /
Akron, OH). Immediately after the first media timeout, the Lady Bears
first made scores by #21 NaKeisha “Hoop Queen” Anthony (Guard / Forward /
5 – 10 / Senior / Charlotte, NC) and #25 Jamie “Guru” Goshen (Guard /
6 – 0 / Senior / Chesapeake, VA) to extended their lead to double
digits, 13 – 3. JCSU’s seventh year Head Coach Vanessa Taylor called for her
first thirty second timeout. The short breather seemed to give the Lady
Golden Bulls their “second wind” they needed as they tallied two consecutive
scores to end a five minute scoring drought. JCSU charged forward with more
consistent conversions to pull within four, 17 – 13 Shaw. Yet, the Lady
Bears quickly stretched the lead back to seven with Bozeman’s third buried
basket from behind the arc. However, JCSU’s sophomore guard #32 Kyria Buford
leaped off nail a three-pointer and then make a fast break lay-up to escort
JCSU within two, 20 – 18 Shaw. The Lady Bears credited themselves with some
breathing room after striking up an 8 – 1 scoring run. Game play paused
again for the final media timeout of the first half. Shaw returned to lead
by 10, 29 – 19, with a jumper by #2 Jessica “The Answer” Davis (Guard / 5
– 5 / Junior / Cleveland, OH) with a little less than three minutes
remaining. Shaw held on to hustle into half-time with a 32 – 25 lead.
At the start of the second half, Bozeman switched shifts with #3 Tanisha
“Make It Rain” McGaughey (Guard / 5 – 11 / Sophomore / Norfolk, VA) in
steering Shaw’s offensive flagship. McGaughey dropped in three scores to
pilot Shaw to take a 40 – 29 lead. Then, Shaw stomped to an obese15 point
lead, 48 – 33, after Andrus accumulated back to back assists to #34 Nicky
“Superwoman” Souter (Forward / Center / 6 – 0 / Senior / Brooklyn, NY)
for a lay-up and then to Goshen for a 12-footer. With 7:58 on the game
clock, Shaw and JCSU motioned to the sideline for a media timeout as the
Lady Bears led 52 – 39. Unfortunately, three minutes and nineteen seconds
would elapse off the game clock without Shaw successfully shooting from the
field. Shortly thereafter, Bozeman made yet another three-pointer, but the
Lady Golden Bulls made treaded back to be within eight points, 59 – 51 Shaw,
with 1:30 left. The Lady Bears sealed the success as Andrus hit two free
throws and McGaughey made four of four free throw attempts in the closing
seconds.
Leading the Lady Bears in scoring was #33 Celanese Bozeman with a game high 15 points (one rebound / one assist / one block / one steal). Providing additional scoring was #3 Tanisha McGaughey as she tallied a double double scoring 10 points and securing a game high 10 rebounds.
The Shaw University Lady Bears will host their final regular season contest before they compete in the 33rd Annual CIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. Shaw will test their talent against the Lady Tigers of Saint Paul’s College on Tuesday, February 19th. The “Senior Night” shootout is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. in C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
