#23 shaw tallies two tough road losses
Lady Bears’ Losing Streak Sadly Stretched to Six Straight
December 28 – 29, 2007 – Miami Shores, Florida – The #23 Shaw University Lady Bears looked to pocket two victories in the Barry University Classic before the birth of the New Year. Unfortunately, the Lady Bears drew the short end of the stick against the hosting institution, Barry University, losing 54 – 41 and then were defeated 63 – 52 to NOVA Southeastern University on day two. The Lady Bears’ record now stands at 5 – 8 Overall, 2 – 1 CIAA.
On day one against Barry, Shaw found great difficulty in making the Health & Sports Center a “home away from home.” The Lady Bears were decisively distracted by the Lady Bucs’ defense as they were able to convert on only five of 27 field goal attempts in the first half; which included Shaw making one of ten three point attempts. Their 18.5% field goal percentage was considerably crutched by their scorching free throw percentage of 84.6% (11 of 13). Despite a slow start, the Lady Bears halted Barry’s offense from scoring in the final two minutes of the first half. In addition, a jumper by #3 Tanisha McGaughey (Guard / 5 – 11 / Freshman / Norfolk, VA) and two made free throws by #25 Jamie Goshen (Guard / 6 – 0 / Senior / Chesapeake, VA) to knot the contest at 22 – 22 at the intermission. In the second half, Shaw’s struggle continued as they shot 18.4% (seven of 38) from the field and 7.7% (one of 13) from three-point territory. At the 12:28 mark, the Lady Bears trailed by two (34 – 32 Barry) after #52 KeyAuna Jenkins (Forward / 6 – 0 / Junior / Cleveland, OH) grabbed an offensive rebound and tossed in the putback. However, the Lady Bucs bolted on a 15 – 3 scoring run over the next 10 minutes to take their largest lead of 14 points. The Lady Bears were unable to recover from the large point deficit. Leading in scoring for Shaw was #25 Jamie Goshen with a game high 17 points (three rebounds / one steal). Providing additional scoring was #3 Tanisha McGaughey with nine points (two rebounds / one steal). The premier rebounder was #34 Nicky Souter (Forward / Center / 6 – 0 / Senior / Brooklyn, NY) as she collected 12 rebounds (five points / three steals).
On the second day of competition, Shaw shot a fair 32.3% (10 of 31) from the field in the first half. The Lady Bears took an opening lead (3 – 0 Shaw) at the 17:17 mark when #25 Jamie Goshen deposited a three-pointer and then retook the lead 14 - 13 at the 8:34 mark when Goshen rained in a jumper. Although, NOVA immediately stepped back out in the forefront, Shaw’s #3 Tanisha McGaughey nailed a three-pointer just as time expired to gift the Lady Bears with a 26 – 24 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Lady Bears’ offense was put on ice as they made eight of 43 field goal attempts (18.6%). The Lady Sharks attacked Shaw to make seven of 11 three point attempts. Just inside the six minute mark, the game’s eight tie stood at 47 – 47. From there, NOVA navigated out of Shaw’s reach to build a lead as large as 11 points. Leading in scoring was #3 Tanisha McGaughey with a game high 19 points (five rebounds / two assists / seven steals). Providing additional scoring was #25 Jamie Goshen with 12 points (two rebounds / two steals). Once again, the top “go-getter” on the boards was #34 Nicky Souter with 13 rebounds (four points / three steals).
The #23 Shaw University Lady Bears will return to Raleigh and look to start the New Year off on the right paw with a victory as they take on University of South Carolina Aiken on January 2, 2007. The home contest is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
