#16 Shaw DEFEATS LIVINGSTONE
Lady Bears Bypass Lady Blue Bears by Twenty-Four

December 4, 2007Salisbury, NC – The #16 Shaw University Lady Bears left their home turf to take on the Lady Blue Bears of Livingstone College. The Lady Bears delivered Livingstone their seventh season loss after walking out of William Trent Gymnasium with a 70 – 46 win.

Shaw snatched the opening tip-off. However, it was LC’s #21 Asheka Hudson that tallied the first points of the game with a three-pointer. The Lady Bears made their first two points after a lay-up by #21 NaKeisha Anthony (Guard / 5 – 11 / Senior / Charlotte, NC).  Then, #52 KeyAuna Jenkins (Forward /6 – 0 / Junior / Cleveland, OH) birth the game’s first tie (3 -3) connecting on one of two attempted free throws. Over the next four minutes, the Lady Bears defensively dominated the Lady Blues to force a four-minute scoring drought. As for Shaw, they overlooked all Livingstone speed limit signs to unknot a 5 -5 tie and take a nine point lead (14 – 5). The Lady Bears briskly passed their baton of success to one another convincing their opponents to take a full timeout at the 12:51 mark and a thirty-second timeout at the 11:41 mark after #25 Jamie Goshen (Guard / 6 – 0 / Senior / Chesapeake, VA) nailed a three-pointer. Inside the three minute mark, the Lady Bears led 27 – 18 after a long range two-pointer by #2 Jessica Davis (Regularly #11 / Guard / 5 – 2 / Junior / Cleveland, OH). Shaw’s #15 Tammy Lanier (Guard / 5 – 2 / Freshman / Atlanta, GA) knocked down a fast break jumper in the closing seconds to lift the Lady Bears into half-time leading 30 – 22.

It could be considered a definite decision that Shaw wanted to expeditiously extend their eight-point score margin. The Lady Bears’ Davis initiated the “Shaw Shootout” as she opened the second half with back-to-back baskets. Consequently, LC took at timeout at the 18:06 mark. Shaw’s 10 – 2 scoring streak was capped with a tough in-the-paint two-pointer tossed in by Jenkins and a banked in basket by #5 Jan’el Baxter (Guard / 6 – 0 / Sophomore / Raleigh, NC). Moments later, Goshen successfully soaked the nets from deep in three-point territory to give the Lady Bears a lead of 20 points (45 – 25) with a little less than 12 minutes remaining. The Lady Blue Bears did not simply roll over as they trimmed their point deficit to 11 points (53 – 42) with a lay-up by #5 Sherrell Lawson at the 5:21 mark. Nevertheless, Shaw “upped their anny” for their largest lead of 25 points (70 – 45) after a close conversion by Lanier.

The Lady Bears had three student-athletes to finish in double figures. Leading all scorers was #21 NaKeisha Anthony with a game high 19 points (seven rebounds / four assists).  Providing additional scoring was #2 Jessica Davis with 16 points (one rebound / three assists) and #25 Jamie Goshen with 11 points (three rebounds / one assist). Shaw’s top rebounder was #34 Nicky Souter as she took possession of eight rebounds.
