#23 Shaw defeated by Barton
Lady
Bears’ Frosty Field Goal Shooting
Results in Third Season Loss
December 11, 2007 – Wilson, NC – The #23 Shaw University Lady Bears battled the Lady Bulldogs of Barton College. The Lady Bears were bitten for their third loss of the season after shooting a wintry 33% from the field (18 of 54) and committing 32 turnovers. Their competition on the tough terrain finished with Shaw being defeated by Barton, 64 – 48.
In the first half of play, the Lady Bears found deafening difficulty in successfully sinking shots and mustering momentum. Shaw shot an ice rink temperature of 22.6% (seven of 31) from the field; including misfiring on all four attempts from behind the arc.
Unfortunately, Shaw’s 27 – 18 halftime deficit would be as close as they would come to being in the forefront of the Lady Bulldogs. In the second half, the Lady Bears shot with fiery fingertips as they vastly improved their field goal shooting success to drain 11 of 23 shot attempts (47.8%). Furthermore, Shaw was just two missed attempts shy of being perfect from the free throw line (80% - eight of 10). However, the Lady Bulldogs used successful streaky scoring and their home court advantage to secure the mid-month win.
Leading the Lady Bears in their efforts was #25 Jamie Goshen (Guard / 6 – 0 / Senior / Chesapeake, VA) with 16 points (four rebounds / one steal). Providing additional scoring was #21 NaKeisha Anthony (Guard / Forward / 5 – 10 / Senior / Charlotte, NC) with nine points (five rebounds / three assists / two steals) and #3 Tanisha McGaughey (Guard / 5 – 11 / Freshman / Norfolk, VA) with six points (five rebounds / one assist / two steals). Shaw had a three-way tie for the title of top rebounder. Included in the class was Anthony, McGaughey, and #34 Nicky Souter (Forward / Center / Senior / 6 – 0 / Brooklyn, NY) as each student-athlete took possession of five rebounds each.
The #23 Shaw University Lady Bears will take on NOVA Southeastern University on Saturday, December 15, 2007. The game will take place in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
