Lady Bears Secure Fourth Feat of Season
With Win Against Lady Golden Eagles

November 26, 2007Raleigh, NC – The #17 Shaw University Lady Bears tightly bow-tied up their black Nike athletic footwear as they hosted their post-holiday contest against the University of Charleston Lady Golden Eagles.  The CIAA versus WVIAC cross-conference competition concluded with the Lady Bears defeating the Lady Golden Eagles 73 – 62.

The tip-off was tapped into the hands of Shaw’s visiting opponents. The score stood at 6 – 3 in favor of the Lady Bears after #21 NaKeisha Anthony (Guard / Forward /5 – 10 / Senior / Charlotte, NC) collected her first two assists following back-to-back baskets by #52 KeyAuna Jenkins (Forward / 6 – 0 / Junior / Cleveland, OH). The Golden Eagles took flight for a 7 – 6 lead with a lane cutting lay-up by #21 Ali Tobias. Shaw stepped back out in forefront 10 – 9 with consecutive jumpers from #25 Jamie Goshen (Guard / 6 – 0 / Senior / Chesapeake, VA). Anthony stepped behind the arc to hit nothing but the bottom of the net and tallied her third assist after passing her steal to #11 Jessica Davis (Guard / 5 – 5 / Junior / Cleveland, OH) for the banked off the backboard basket to escort Shaw to a 17 – 14 lead. Unfortunately, the Lady Golden Eagles would squawk back with four unanswered scores to lead by eight points (22 – 17 UC). Shaw stormed back to tie the game for the second time at 25 – 25 with two short shots by Davis and a long-range two-pointer by #15 Tammy Lanier (Guard / 5 – 6 / Freshman / Atlanta, GA). However, UC’s #1 Diandra Bremond jumper and made free throw after the foul gifted the Golden Lady Eagles with a one point lead (28 – 27) entering the intermission.

Although Shaw shot a fair 34% from the field compared to their opponents’ frigid 29% from the field in the first half, it is almost certain the Lady Bears entered the second half of play ready to manufacture warmer temperature percentages. Shaw and UC were tied on three separate occasions within the first five minutes of the second half (30 – 30 / 32 – 32 / 35 – 35). The Lady Golden Eagles took their first full timeout at the 14:34 mark after #3 Tanisha McGaughey (Guard / 5 – 11 / Freshman / Norfolk, VA) took possession of a steal and converted on the fast break lay-up to give the Lady Bears a 39 – 38 lead. It was only two minutes later in which UC requested a thirty second timeout due to McGaughey dialing long distance to tickle the twine with a fast break three-pointer putting Shaw up 42 – 38 with 11 minutes remaining. The Lady Bears increased their point margin advantage 46 – 43 after fast break lay-ups by #34 Nicky Souter (Forward / Center / 6 – 0 / Senior / Brooklyn, NY) and Davis. In the next six minutes, both team sporadically scored 10 points each as Shaw still grasped a greasy three-point lead. Yet, Shaw supporters sang soprano in their spirit-soaked cheers after “swoosh” three-pointers by Lanier and McGaughey. The Lady Bears built their largest lead of nine points (64 – 55) with 1:45 seconds left in the game. Nonetheless, the Lady Golden Eagles pulled within three (65 – 62 Shaw) via a corner behind the arc connection by Tobia with fifty seconds on the game clock. In the closing seconds, fans removed keys from coat pockets and purses as Shaw sealed the victory converting eight of eight free throws in the last fifty seconds.

Leading in scoring for the Lady Bears was #15 Tammy Lanier with 17 points. Also scoring in double figures was #3 Tanisha McGaughey with 16 points. Leading in rebounding was #55 Jihan Howard (Center / 6 – 5 / Junior / South Orange, NJ) with 12 rebounds.

The Shaw University Lady Bears are now 4 – 1 Overall, 1 – 1 CIAA. The Lady Bears will navigate to Salisbury, NC on December 4, 2007 for their second CIAA season match-up against the Livingstone College Lady Blue Bears. Tip-off will take place at 5:30 p.m.
