Lady Bears’ Early Lead Slips Away To Result in Second Season Loss

December 7, 2007 Raleigh, NC – The #16 Shaw University Lady Bears concluded their examinations with well enough time to prepare for their cross conference competition with the Lady Bulldogs of Wingate University. Despite possessing a lead as large of 14 points, the Lady Bears dropped their second loss of the season after being beaten by the Lady Bulldogs, 80 – 66.

The Lady Bears’ #52 KeyAuna Jenkins (Forward / 6 – 0 / Junior / Cleveland, OH) tapped the tip-off into the hands of her receiving teammate. Shortly thereafter, Jenkins knocked down a jumper to score Shaw’s first basket. WU’s #21 Kasey Gillis was responsible for tying the ball game on the first three times (2 – 2 / 4 – 4 / 6 – 6) as she responded to Shaw’s speedy offensive production with two successful conversions at the charity stripe and two short shots. Head Coach Jacques Curtis opted to utilize his first full timeout at the 14:30 mark with his Lady Bears leading 10 – 9.  A little less than three minutes later, the opposing head coach signaled to the zebra striped officials to take her first full timeout after Shaw scurried away on an 8 – 3 scoring run (23 – 14 Shaw). Lady Bear supporters began to open up their umbrellas and slip on their “wet-wear” as Shaw flooded the floor with a plethora of offensive production to take a 14 point lead. However, the Lady Bulldogs bit off the Lady Bears’ defensive leash to strike up a 12 – 2 scoring run and cut the lead to just four (33 – 29 Shaw) with 3:40 left in the first half. Fortunately, Shaw increased their cushion with consecutive deep three-pointers by #21 NaKeisha Anthony (Guard / Forward / 6 – 0 / Senior / Charlotte, NC), # 15 Tammy Lanier (Guard / 5 – 6 / Freshman / Atlanta, GA), and then #3 Tanisha McGaughey (Guard / Freshman / 5 – 11 / Norfolk, VA). The triple threat three-point terrorists greatly aided in the Lady Bears possessing a 42 – 31 lead at halftime.

After the intermission, WU’s Gillis was the first to find success in putting the ball in the hoop. The Lady Bulldogs’ #14 Jessy Keitt tacked on two more points after seizing a steal. WU tracked back to be within three points of the Lady Bears, 46 – 43, following a 12 – 4 scoring run. Consequently, at the 14:22 mark, WU took their first lead of the game, 49 – 48, after #35 Kate Edwards made a fast break jumper. Shaw regained the lead, 52 – 50, when #34 Nicky Souter (Forward / Center / 6 – 0 / Senior / Brooklyn, NY) dished an animated assist to #30 Khandi Joseph (Forward / 6 – 1 / Sophomore / St. Vincent, WI) for the lay-up. Nevertheless, the Lady Bulldogs bullied back with an 11 – 2 scoring run to take a 61 – 52 lead. With three minutes remaining, WU led 72 – 60. As time quickly elapsed off of the game clock, the Lady Bulldogs made critical shots to protect their lead and secure the win.

Leading in scoring for the Lady Bears was #25 Jamie Goshen (Guard / 6 – 0 / Senior / Chesapeake, VA) with 15 points (one rebound / one assist). Also scoring in double figures was #21 NaKeisha Anthony with 10 points (six rebounds / six assists / one block) as #34 Nicky Souter scored nine points (eight rebounds / two assists / one block). The premier rebounder was #52 KeyAuna Jenkins as she collected a game high 10 rebounds (eight points / three blocks / two assists).

The #16 Shaw University Bears will travel to Wilson, NC to take on the Lady Bulldogs of Barton College. The game will take place on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at 5:30 p.m.
