Shaw Secures Fourth Consecutive CIAA Conquest
January 12, 2008 – Raleigh, NC – The Shaw University Lady Bears played hosts to the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University. Shaw streaked to their fourth consecutive CIAA win while handing the eastern division’s top ranked Lady Bulldogs their second loss of the season with the 71 – 66 triumph.
At the start of competition, the tip-off was tapped into the hands of #3 Tanisha McGaughey (Guard / 5 – 11 / Freshman / Norfolk, VA). However, their visiting opponents penetrated the paint to take a 4 – 0 lead. The Lady Bears tallied their first two points to the scoreboard with a made jumper by #11 Jessica Davis (Guard / 5 – 5 / Junior / Cleveland, OH). After two consecutive turnovers by the Lady Bulldogs, Shaw’s #41 Rebecca Hyppolite (Forward / 5 – 11 / Junior / Montreal Quebec, Canada) released a successful two-pointer to birth the game’s first tie at 4 – 4. BSU broke the tie with two consecutive scores to lead 9 – 4. After a Lady Bulldog timeout, the Lady Bears battled back within one point, 9 – 8 BSU, with a basket each by #21 NaKeisha Anthony (Guard / Forward / 5 – 10 / Senior / Charlotte, NC) and McGaughey. Shaw snatched their first lead of the game at the 10:25 mark, 12 – 11, as a result of two made free throws by McGaughey. After a timeout called by Head Coach Jacques Curtis, Shaw struck BSU with a powerful punch. That “one hitter quitter” was none other than #25 Jamie Goshen (Guard / 6 – 0 / Senior / Chesapeake, VA). Goshen buried back-to-back-to-back baskets to pilot the Lady Bears to an 18 – 11 lead. Shaw’s point margin was immediately increased to 23 – 11 with a behind the arc conversion and short jumper by #15 Tammy Lanier (Guard / 5 – 6 / Freshman / Atlanta, GA). With a little less than six minutes remaining, the Lady Bulldogs resurfaced after the Lady Bears’ 13 – 0 scoring run to score two points and end their three minute scoring drought. Shaw converted on four straight free throws to maintain a proportional point margin advantage, 27 – 14, with 4:13 on the game clock. Shaw’s offense continued to step in sync as they built a lead as large as 16 points, 35 – 19, with consecutive three-pointers by Anthony and then McGaughey. Shaw skipped into the intermission with a 37 – 24 lead.
The Lady Bears bolted in the second half to pick up just where they left off at the break. However, after the first ten minutes of play, the Lady Bulldogs significantly shortened the one pre-existing “Grand Canyon” of a gap that separated both teams. At the 10:08 mark, two made free throws by #10 Bianca Lee reduced Shaw’s lead to just one, 48 – 47 Shaw. Shortly thereafter, another one of two attempt from the charity stripe by BSU would tie the game at 48 – 48 with nine minutes left. The Lady Bears called for a full timeout at the 8:34 mark. The Lady Bulldogs lunged ahead 50 – 48 with an aggressive putback by #34 Allyson Swailes, but the contest was knotted at 50 – 50 with two made free throws by McGaughey. After two more ties at 52 – 52 and 54 – 54, the Lady Bears stepped out in front to lead 58 – 54 with four minutes to go after a drive and dish by McGaughey to Goshen for the three-pointer followed by a turnaround two by Anthony. Then, Lanier distracted the BSU defense with her dandy dribbling and then dished to Goshen for yet another three-pointer just before #34 Nicky Souter (Forward / Center / Senior / 6 – 0 / Brooklyn, NY) caught an offensive rebound and tossed in the put-back in mid-air. The Lady Bulldogs took a timeout as the Lady Bears led 63 – 56. BSU’s head coach called for another timeout with 27 seconds left in the game with the score, 65 – 60 Shaw. With 13.5 seconds on the game clock, BSU barricaded the Lady Bears in their own backcourt. The press proved to be effective as the Lady Bulldogs took possession of two steals and were awarded two trips to the free throw line as a result of fouls charged to Shaw. BSU sunk three of four free throws to trail by two, 65 – 63 Shaw. The Lady Bears’ Lanier, Goshen, and Davis each made two free throws to secure the win in the closing seconds.
Shaw had four players to finish with double figures. Leading all scorers was #25 Jamie Goshen with 24 points (six rebounds / one assist). Providing additional scoring was #3 Tanisha McGaughey with 14 points (three rebounds / three assists / one block / two steals), #21 NaKeisha Anthony with 11 points (six rebounds / five assists / two steals), and #15 Tammy Lanier with 10 points (two rebounds / one assist). There was a two way tie between Goshen and Anthony for top rebounder as they each recorded six a piece.
The Shaw University Lady Bears will navigate to Petersburg, Virginia to test their talent against the Lady Trojans of Virginia State University on Tuesday, January 15, 2008. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. in Daniel Gymnasium.
