LADY BEARS BITTEN BY LADY BULLDOGS
Shaw’s Winning Streak Snapped by Bowie

February 9, 2008 Bowie, MD – The Shaw University Lady Bears battled the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University.  Despite shooting for a wintry 27.6% (eight of 29) field goal percentage in the first half, Shaw held a lead by as many as six points over the Eastern Division’s top team. However, the Lady Bears were “home baked” by Bowie for the 82 – 57 defeat. The Lady Bears record now stands at 14 – 11 Overall, 11 – 3 CIAA, and 4 – 2 Division.

After the Lady Bears took possession of the tip-off, #5 Shana “Showtime” Andrus (Guard / 5 – 9 / Junior / Akron, OH) deposited the first two points of the game. BSU pulled ahead for a 6 – 4 lead with three consecutive scores from junior #22 Sherika Thomas. Shaw tied the game at 6 – 6 with a savvy assist from #3 Tanisha “ Make It Rain” McGaughey (Guard / 5 – 11 / Sophomore / Norfolk, VA) to #33 Celanese “Sharp Shooter” Bozeman (Guard / 5 – 9 / Junior / Hampton, VA) for a lay-up. BSU’s Thomas continued to be the “go-to-gal” as she drained her first three-pointer which gave the Lady Bulldogs a 13 – 6 lead. Immediately after the home team’s thirty second time out, Shaw’s #25 Jamie “Guru” Goshen (Guar d / 6 – 0 / Senior / Chesapeake, VA) capped an 8 – 0 scoring run with her second made jumper of the game; Shaw led 14 – 13. BSU requested their first full at the 10:29 mark shortly after freshman #13 Lakisha Walker configured a three point play. Unfortunately, the Lady Bears underwent a four minute scoring drought. As for the Lady Bulldogs, Walker’s previous points production initiated an 11 – 0 scoring run by BSU for a double digit lead, 24 – 14, with a little less than eight minutes remaining in the first half. The Lady Bears seemed to be shooting at a rotating rim as they found further difficulty in converting from inside and outside of the arc. The Lady Bulldogs took full advantage of their “home sweet home” to greatly increase their plump point margin they held over the Lady Bears. BSU led 38 – 22 at the break.

In the second half, the Lady Bears still had trouble in connecting on all cylinders as a cohesive unit. However, McGaughey and Andrus took turns toting the offensive torch for Shaw as they flushed in five field goals apiece. Yet, the Lady Bulldogs’ kept their bonfire blazing with their steady stream of offensive production. Everything seemingly and literally fell for BSU; especially when released from the hands of Thomas and senior #34 Allyson Swailes. Thomas and Swailes tagged teamed Shaw with four straight scores each to gift the Lady Bulldogs with their largest lead of 29 points just under the seven minutes mark. The Lady Bears remained competitive, but the Lady Bulldogs proved to possess a lead too great to complete a comeback.

Leading the Lady Bears in scoring was #5 Shana Andrus with 18 points (eight rebounds / four assists). In addition, Shaw’s #3 Tanisha McGaughey scored 17 points (seven rebounds / five assists / two steals).

The Shaw University Lady Bears return to Raleigh as they prepare to host the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University on Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at 5:30 in C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
