LADY BEARS WIN IT AT FREE THROW LINE

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA – Virginia Union University held Shaw University to only 21 first half points, but the Lady Bears would bounce back and pull out the victory at the charity stripe 45-40. The final eight points for the Lady Bears were made at the free throw line to improves their record to 16-8 overall, 12-5 in the CIAA and 7-2 in the Eastern Division. The loss drops Virginia Union to 7-15 overall, 4-13 in the CIAA and 2-6 in the Eastern Division.
The Lady Bears of Shaw scored first but the Lady Panthers were not going to give up that easily, as they would take the lead with 9:35 remaining in the first and not look back to go to recess with the lead 23-21. Neither team shot well in the first half with Shaw hitting only nine-of-30 from the field (30.0 percent). Virginia Union connected on only one more shot than the Lady Bears making only 10 of 28 attempts (35.7 percent) in the first half. The first 20 minutes of action featured 20 turnovers between the two teams, 11 of which came from the Lady Panthers which Shaw converted into eight points.
Virginia Union dominated on the glass, out rebounding Shaw 51-37 with Shawanda Geter pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds and scoring six points. Nicky Souter (6’2, JR, Forward, Brooklyn, NY) would grab team high 12 rebounds and add four points for the Lady Bears. Celanese Bozeman (5’9, SO, Guard, Hampton, VA) would score team high 16 points and making seven-of-eight from the free throw line in SU’s victory. There was one negative thing between the two teams, as they committed a total of 43 turnovers in the contest. The Lady Bears scored 15 points off of 26 VUU turnovers and 27 points off the bench.
Standing out for the Lady Panthers was Katchona Johnson who recorded a double-double on the night with game high 19 points and 12 rebounds.
The Lady Bears will return to action on Saturday, February 17th when they host the Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University in a CIAA Western Divisional match-up.
