Lady Bears Cruise by Virginia State, 68-55

Three Lady Bears’ Score in double-figures

 

Ettrick, VA – Shaw University held Virginia State University to a season-low 17 first half points and cruised to a 68-55 victory.  Shaw improves its record 17-9 overall, 13-6 in the CIAA and 8-2 in the Eastern Division and the Lady Trojans fall to 8-17 overall, 5-15 in the CIAA and 3-5 in the Eastern Division.  

 

The Lady Bears scored first and never once looked back. Virginia State would not score their first field goal until 8:02 remaining in the first half with the score 18-4. The Lady Bears shot well in the first half making 11-of-26 (42.3%) from the field while Virginia State only shot 21.7 (five-of-23) percent from field. The Lady Bears went on a 10-0 run to start the game before VSU would connect on field goal by Monique Mason.

 

Shaw dominated on the glass as well, out rebounding Virginia State 44-35 with Na’Keisha Anthony (5’10, JR, Guard, Charlotte, NC) pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds.  Anthony also drooped nine points on the night. The Lady Bears were by led by freshman Tanisha McGaughey (5’9, Guard, Norfolk, VA) who tied her season-high with 16 points and grabbed four rebounds in the victory for the Lady Bears. Also scoring in double-figures for Shaw was Celanese Bozeman (5’9, SO, Guard, Hampton, VA) and Jamie Goshen (6’0, JR, Guard, Chesapeake, VA) who scored 13 and 10 points respectively on the night in the Lady Bears victory.

 

Standing out for the Lady Trojans was Monique Mason who scored game-high 25 points and recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for VSU was Katania Walker with 11 point on the night.

 

The Lady Bears have guaranteed themselves a bye and the #3 spot in the upcoming CIAA tournament to be held in Charlotte, NC. The Lady Bears will return to action on Thursday, February 22nd for their final game of the season before traveling to Charlotte, NC to defend their CIAA crown. They take on the Lady Blue Bears of Livingstone College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
