Lady Bears fall to the Lady Golden Bulls, 61-53
An Enormous 62 Turnovers Were Committed in the Contest

RALEIGH, NC – The Lady Bears committed 31 turnovers on the night, which aided Smith in a 61-53 victory. The Lady Bears fall to 16-9 overall and 12-6 in the CIAA while the Lady Golden Bulls improves to 14-11 overall, and 9-9 in conference play. Shaw was led by Celanese Bozeman (5’9, SO, Guard, Hampton, VA) who tied game high 19 points on the night.
The first half resembled more of a turnover fest rather than a collegiate basketball game as both teams committed a combined 37 turnovers. Smith controlled an 11-point lead which the Lady Bears eventually cut to three points. Bozeman hit a buzzer-beater three-ball to go into the intermission down by three (32-29). The Lady Bears made 10-of-21(47.6%) shots in the first half to cut the lead to three at the half.
Smith continued the turnovers going into the second half committing six within the first five minutes. Shaw turned those turnovers into six points and the first tie of the ball game with 14:52 remaining in the contest. The Bears took their first lead on a short jumper by Erika Bailey with 10 minutes left in the game.
Johnson C. Smith finally regained the lead on an “and-1” by Demetria Bell with 3:50 left in the game (50-49). The Golden Bulls pulled away to control a seven-point advantage within the final minutes of the game.
The Lady Bears scored 24-points in the paint, 18-points off turnovers, and 10-points off the bench. Bozeman made three-of-nine from beyond the 3-point arc on the night for the Lady Bears, as they shot 38% on the night on 19-of-50 to gain her 19 points. Also chipping in for the Lady Bears was Tavia Clemendor (6’0, JR, Forward, Danville, VA) who added 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Standing out for the Lady Golden Bulls was Bell who was the teams leading scorer with 19 points. Also aiding was Shemika Jones who scored 12 points in the victory.
The Lady Bears will return to action on Tuesday, February 20th as they travel to Petersburg, VA to take on the Lady Trojans of Virginia State University in a CIAA Western Divisional match-up.
