SOUTER HELP GUIDE SHAW PAST BOWIE STATE, 65-39

RALEIGH, NC– Shaw University held Bowie State University to a season-low 12 first half points and cruised to a 65-39 victory.  Shaw improves its record 15-8 overall, 11-5 in the CIAA and 6-2 in the Eastern Division and the Lady Bulldogs fall to 14-8 overall, 10-6 in the CIAA and 3-4 in the Eastern Division.

The Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State scored first but the Lady Bears went on an 8-0 run to put Shaw ahead to stay.  Both teams shot poorly in the first half with Shaw hitting only six-of-20 from the field (30.0 percent).  Bowie State connected on a season-low four field goals (out of 27 attempts) in the first half, which translated into 14.8 percent.  The first 20 minutes of action featured three technical fouls, all on Bowie State.  To further complicate things, BSU’s Lady Bulldogs missed all 10 of its first half 3-pointers, converted just four-of-10 from the charity stripe and went the final 6:39 without a field goal.

Shaw dominated on the glass as well, out rebounding Bowie State 53-34 with Nicky Souter (6’2, JR, Forward, Brooklyn, NC) pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds.  Souter also led both teams in scoring with a game-high 13 points to record another double-double on the year.  There was one negative thing about Shaw.  The Lady Bears committed 31 turnovers, which accounted for almost half of Bowie State’s points.  Erika Bailey (6’1, SR, Forward, Newport News, VA) hit 10-of-13 free throws and finished the game with 12 points and snatched nine rebounds for the Lady Bears.

Standing out for the Lady Bulldogs was Tyruh Lusby who led with nine points on the night and Allyson Swailes who grabbed time high nine rebounds on the night.

The Lady Bears will return to action on Tuesady, February 13th as they travel to Richmond, VA to take on the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Barco-Stevens Hall. For additional information, please contact the Shaw University Office of Sports Information at mwilliams@shawu.edu.
