The Shaw women's basketball team brutally defeated the Lady Blue
Bears of Livingstone 66-34 in the quarterfinal round of the CIAA
Women's Basketball Tournament at the RBC Center.
Costly first half turnovers (19) and poor shooting (4-23) quickly dwindled
Livingstone's chances of pulling off a major upset of the
top-seeded team.Livingstone held a brief 5-2 advantage in the game's opening
seven minutes before the Lady Bears scored 21 unanswered
points to take a 23-5 lead with 4:01 to go in the first
half. The Lady Blue Bears shot a dismal 17.4
percent from the field and only connected on one of its
seven free throw attempts in the first stanza. Shaw
led 30-9 at halftime. Shaw enjoyed its biggest
cushion, 59-22, on layup by Tameka Brown with 6:54 remaining
in the game.
"They played bad and we played bad," said Shaw head coach Jacques Curtis. "It wasn't a very entertaining game."
Shaw was led by Latasha Shipman who finished with 14 points. Livingstone's ship was captained by junior Chloe' McInnis with 11 points and 15 rebounds.
Shaw, the reigning conference champions, advances to a semifinal match-up with the Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith, a rematch of last year's CIAA Tournament final, Friday at 3 p.m.
