It hasn’t happened many times in the CIAA
and hadn’t happened before in Shaw history – that being the Lady Bears
going undefeated in CIAA regular season play.
Until now.
Kiarsha Curtis led Shaw with 21 points as
Shaw defeated Virginia State 80-56. Shaw,
who has already wrapped up the CIAA’s eastern division and a first round bye
in next week’s CIAA tournament, goes undefeated in the CIAA regular season
for the first time in school history.
Virginia State (2-7, 3-10, 6-16) jumped out
to an early 5-0 lead and had the Lady Bears rattled at first.
The Lady Bears would rally and take an 11-10 lead on a lay-up by
Chrystal Baptist (13 points, 14 rebounds) with 12 minutes 55 seconds remaining
in the first half. After Virginia
State regained the lead, Shaw would get it back for good as Latasha Shipman (17
points, 11 rebounds) hit a three-pointer with 7:20 remaining in the first to
give the Lady Bears the 18-16 lead. The
Lady Bears extended their lead to 32-23 at halftime.
In the second half, Shaw (10-0, 16-0, 24-2)
went on a 14-6 run and led by 46-29 on a jumper by Shipman with 16:32
remaining. Shaw held its biggest
lead of the game 66-35 with 9:45 remaining.
Shaw shot 51 percent from the field in the second half.
Erica Glasper and Tyechia Cooke led Virginia State with 14 points a-piece.
Shaw will play its last regular season game on Friday when they travel to South Carolina to take on Converse at 5:30 p.m.
