NC - SU All American Ronald Murray was the 42nd pick of the NBA
Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. His selection made him the
first SU basketball player to be drafted into the NBA. To see

CARTER NAMED CIAA ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR

Raleigh, NC – The CIAA
named Alfonza Carter the Athletic Director of the Year and also
selected the Shaw University athletic program as the Jeanette A.
Lee Athletic Achievement Award winner.
Carter, in his third year as Director of
Athletics, led the Bears program to its first ever CIAA Men’s
Basketball title, NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional title
and the Elite Eight appearance finishing as a final four
participant. The
Bears also won the CIAA Baseball title, Tennis won the CIAA
Eastern Division title and finished second in the CIAA
Tournament, Volleyball won the Eastern Division title and
finished second in the CIAA Tournament, Softball won the Eastern
Division title and Men’s Cross Country finished second at the
CIAA Championships.
The Jeanette A. Lee Athletic Achievement Award is selected by
the CIAA Commissioner for outstanding athletic administration
and achievement for their athletic program each year.
SANDERS NAMED CIAA BASEBALL COACH OF THE YEAR
Hampton, VA – Shaw
University head baseball coach Bobby Sanders has been selected
as the 2002 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA)
Baseball Coach of the Year.
This is the second consecutive year Coach Sanders has won
the award.

Sanders guided the Bears to a 21-15 overall record and the CIAA
Championship. The
Bears finished second in the regular season race with a 11-5
conference record and entered tournament play as the second
seed. In CIAA
tournament play, SU went 3-0 defeating Virginia State 14-11, #1
seed Elizabeth City State 7-6 and Virginia State 19-15 in the

BEARS RETURNING TO THE
GRIDIRON WITH 10-GAME SCHEDULE
Raleigh, NC - The Shaw
University Bears will return after 23 years to collegiate
football action this fall with a 10 - game schedule. "We
are excited about the upcoming schedule, especially with most
of the games in Raleigh," stated SU Head Coach Greg
Ruffin. SU has not sponsored football since 1979 and the new
era of Bears Football will kickoff at home on Saturday, August
31 at 1:30pm against Fork Union Military Academy. All home
games will be played at John H. Baker, SR Stadium (Southeast
Raleigh High). SU will compete on the club level in 2002 and
will move up to NCAA Division II and CIAA competition in 2003.
The Bears will also host St. Paul's College (September 21),
Hargrave Military Academy (October 5), Bethel College
(November 9) and will
close out with Homecoming against Webber International
University (November 23). The Bears will travel
to George Mason University, Allen University, Edward Waters
College, St. Paul's, and the match -up with cross town rival
St. Augustine's College will be hosted by the Falcons this
season. "The football staff and I feel as though this
schedule will allow us to compete at a very high level in our
inaugural season. With five home games our alumni and the
community will have a chance to enjoy college football right
here in Raleigh," concluded Ruffin.
BEARS TENNIS FINISHED 2ND
Prince George County, VA- The
Shaw Bears Tennis team made an impressive showing in the 2002
CIAA Tournament with 3 singles victories and 3 runner ups. After
the first day of play was rescheduled due to weather, Shaw won a No.
1 Men’s singles victory with Michael Oladele defeating C.
Brown of NCCU (6-0, 6-1). In No. 2 singles, Samuel Okoya
defeated L. Jenkins of VSU(6-3, 6-3). In No. 3 singles Shaw
obtained another victory with John Agori defeating R. Headen of
NCCU in an impressive match in which Headen went scoreless (6-0,
6-0) During the men’s singles finals Shaw won three matches in
No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4 singles with Michael Oladele defeating
C. Lee of JCSU (5-7, 6-3, 6-4), John Agori defeated A. Wing of
JCSU (7-5, 6-7, 6-1), and Kevin Eno defeated J. Gilbert of JCSU
(6-4, 6-4).
LADY
BEARS SOFTBALL OPEN SEASON AT LANDER COLLEGE
The Shaw University Lady
Bears will open their 2002 Softball Schedule tomorrow (Sat.
Feb. 16) at Lander College in the Big Blue Classic. The
Lady Bears will open against Lander College at 10am. They
will also play two additional games tomorrow afternoon.
