William Montague has been head coach of the Cross Country/Track and Field teams since 1991. A native of Raleigh, Montague brings over 25 years of track experience. As the captain of Shaw University’s track teams in the late 1980’s, the versatile Montague earned all-conference honors as well as qualifying for the NCAA’s. While attending Shaw, he was named Most Valuable Player and Most Outstanding Player three times.
Coach Montague has produced over 75 All-CIAA cross country and track performers, a number of NCAA Division II track qualifiers and most recently
three NCAA All-Americans. He earned CIAA Coach of the Year honors in 2000 and
2002 after the women’s cross country team earned the school’s first and
second CIAA Championships
He recently served on the Southeastern Masters Track and Field Board of Directors and has current memberships with the United States Track Association, Division II Cross Country/Track Association and CIAA Track Coaches Association. As a member of the National Dean’s List and Who’s Who of American Students, he earned a BS degree in community recreation with a minor in physical education in 1990 from Shaw University.
Montague, wife Maria and daughter Natasha live in Raleigh.
