Hornsby Howell
Director of Football Operations
Hornsby Howell is entering his third season as director of
football operations at Shaw University. A
1950 graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, Howell has
approximately 30 years of college coaching at Division I level Division 1-AA and
Division II institutions. He has
served in an administrative capacity for approximately 22 years as
administrative assistant to the athletic directors, assistant athletics
director, and athletics director.
Howell, who also
received his Master’s of Arts and Master of Science degree from N.C. A&T
in 1958, worked at the university for over 20 years, as a trainer, assistant
athletics director and interim athletics director. He also served as head
football coach at A&T from 1968-1977, amassing a record of 47-34-4.
The Aggies won the CIAA Championship in 1968 and a share of the 1975 MEAC
Championship. Howell has also served as administrative assistant to
the athletics director at the University of Georgia (1982-96) and interim
athletics director at Savannah State (1996-98).
Howell was the
presenter for 2003 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Elvin Bethea in the
induction ceremony held in Canton, OH. Howell coached Bethea at N.C. A&T,
who starred for the Aggies from 1964-68.
Howell is married
to the former Claudette Barr Bowen of Rocky Mount, NC. He has four children Ruby, Yoletta, Rodney and Hornsby, Jr.
