Robert Brickey
Head Men's Basketball Coach

In August 2005, Robert Brickey was named head men’s basketball coach at Shaw University.  Brickey, a native of Fayetteville, most recently was an assistant coach at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Prior to that, Brickey was an assistant coach at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Brickey played four years at Duke from the 1986-87 season through the 1989-90 season. He served as team captain in 1990 and received first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament honors in 1988. He was a member of three Final Four teams and started in the national championship game in 1990.

Known for his athleticism, Brickey had a brief stint with the Global Basketball Association’s Raleigh Bullfrogs in the early 1990s.

He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Duke University.

Brickey replaced Michael Bernard, who was the head coach for three years at Shaw. His lifetime record was 362-202. His first-year record at Shaw was 21-9 and his time at Shaw totaled a record of 40-46. During the 2002-03 season the Bears earned a berth at NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regionals, finishing in the semi-finals.
