Demarcus Merritt

Director of Sports Information

 

Demarcus Merritt is entering his first year as the Director of Sports Information at Shaw University. Merritt transitioned from Richmond, Virginia to Raleigh, North Carolina to assume his duties on October 1, 2007 after experiencing two years as a Public Relations Intern with the Rudi Johnson Foundation, a selected term as a Public Relations Intern with the Richmond International Raceway (NASCAR), and a total of six years with the Department of Sports Information at Virginia State University. He oversees the publicity efforts for the school's 14 intercollegiate sports and serves as the primary contact for all of the Universities sports teams.

"I was immediately welcomed with warmth and sincerity by the administrators, coaches and student-athletes upon my arrival at Shaw. I am well aware of this school's rooted tradition in values and success as I intend to drown my intelligence in Shaw's river of knowledge."

Merritt is a native of Brunswick County (Emporia), Virginia, but his matriculation to Richmond, Virginia in his early childhood led him to graduate from Meadowbrook High School in Chesterfield County (Richmond), Virginia.  Upon graduation from high school Merritt then ventured to Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA. While at Virginia State, Merritt coordinated the publicity efforts for the school's 13 intercollegiate athletic teams and oversaw the day-to-day operations of the sports information office. Where as he worked as lead statistician for the university’s football, and men’s and women’s basketball programs, he provided a consistent flow of detailed post game summaries for all of the athletic sectors of the 13 sport program.  

Merritt is well respected throughout the CIAA Conference for his extensive knowledge base and expertise, Although he is regarded as an individual of sound independence, Merritt is best depicted as a team player.

Merritt obtained his Bachelor's of Science degree from Virginia State University in 2005. He made school history as he was the first scholar granted admission into the instruction's first ever Sport Management Graduate Program. Merritt successfully completed the program to achieve his Master's of Science degree in 2007. While he begins his "Shaw U Era," Merritt possess blueprints to pursue his doctorate degree in the immediate future.
