Ware to be Color Analyst for Aggie-Eagle Classic

Donal Ware, Assistant AD for Sports Information/Marketing at Shaw University will serve as color analyst for the Aggie-Eagle Classic on WRBZ-AM 850 in Raleigh (Sports Radio 850 TheBuzz).  Ware will call the game with Jarret Whaley, who will serve as play-by-play announcer.  In addition to his duties as sports information director, Ware serves as play-by-play announcer on the Shaw Bear Sports Radio Network.  The game begins at 4:00 p.m.

Carter Named First Vice-President of CIAA
Shaw University athletic director Alfonza Carter has been named first vice-president of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).  This is the third such prestigious appointment for Carter within the last eight months, as he was named to the 2003-04 regional advisory committee for the NCAA Division II Men's Baseball Championship back in December and to the Division II Men's and Women's Tennis Committee back in October.  Read More

Ford-Kee Named Associate AD
Shaw University has named Dianthia Ford-Kee as its Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator.  Shaw University received the NCAA Division II Strategic Alliance Enhancement Matching Program Grant to establish the new position.  The grant will assist Shaw University over a three-year period in funding a full-time (non-coaching) position in the athletics department’s senior management staff.

Dr. Clarence G. Newsome, President of Shaw University, endorsed this position in his efforts of restructuring Shaw University’s athletics department to enhance communications between student-athletes, faculty and staff, to provide additional senior management leadership in the athletic department, and most importantly enhance the role of women on the senior management staff in athletics.  Read More

Carter Named to NCAA Committee

Shaw athletic director Al Carter has been selected by the NCAA Division II Administrative Committee to serve as a member of the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Tennis Committee.

Carter is in his fifth year as Shaw University’s Director of Athletics. Prior to his appointment, he served as Assistant Vice-President for Student Affairs (1995-99). Carter has also served as Director of Admissions and Recruitment (1991-95) and “acting” Director of Athletics (1991).

Prior to his administrative duties at Shaw, Carter served as head women’s basketball coach (1982-87) and head men’s basketball coach (1987-91). His most publicized success came during his men’s basketball tenure. After his teams went 5-19 and 11-16 his first two years, Carter led the Bears to a 19-9 finish during the 1988-89 season and followed with a 20-8 mark during the 1989-1990 season.

The Martinsville, Va. native is a 1973 graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, where he played varsity basketball and served as an assistant coach. Carter had a stellar collegiate career and is a member of the N.C. A&T Athletic Hall of Fame.

Carter Named President of AD's Association
Raleigh, NC - Athletics Director Alfonza Carter has been named President of the CIAA Athletics Directors Association. He was also re-elceted vice-president of the CIAA Eastern Division. The CIAA also named Carter the Athletic Director of the Year and also selected the Shaw University athletic program as the Jeanette A. Lee Athletic Achievement Award winner in June.  The Jeanette A. Lee Athletic Achievement Award is selected by the CIAA Commissioner for outstanding athletic administration and achievement for their athletic program each year.

Carter, in his third year as Director of Athletics, led the Bears program to its first ever CIAA Men’s Basketball title, NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional title and the Elite Eight appearance finishing as a final four participant. The Bears also won the CIAA Baseball title, Tennis won the CIAA Eastern Division title and finished second in the CIAA Tournament, Volleyball won the Eastern Division title and finished second in the CIAA Tournament, Softball won the Eastern Division title and Men’s Cross Country finished second at the CIAA Championships.
