RALEIGH, N.C. – The final non-conference match of the 2018 schedule awaits the Shaw University women's volleyball team on Saturday, Oct. 13, as the Lady Bears will travel to Bluefield, W.V., to face Bluefield State College at 2 p.m. inside the Ned. E. Shott Physical Education Building.
Saturday's meeting will mark just the second clash between the two institutions in program history. The last time Shaw and Bluefield State met was in 1999 with the Lady Bears taking a 3-0 victory on the road.
Shaw (14-6) will enter the match on a 12 match-winning streak, including a 3-0 victory over Livingstone College in its last outing. The program's longest win-streak is 14, which was broken twice in 2016 and 2017. Led by a trio of seniors, the Lady Bears have consistently been led by Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, US Virgin Islands) in kills (165) and kills per set (2.43) while Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez has handed out 416 assists for a 6.12 assist per set average and Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) has led the defense all season with 298 digs and a 4.38 digs per set average.
The Lady Bears are 3-1 at on the road this season but are 3-6 against nonconference opponents.
Luckily, for Shaw, the Lady Blues are still in search of its first win of 2018. Bluefield State has lost 16-straight including five in at home this year all by the scores of 3-0. Raenel Crenshaw post a team-best 21 kills (.64 kills per set) and 38 digs (1.15) while Adeline Jachim is the team's best setter with 1.11 assist per set (40 assists).
Following Saturday's clash, the Lady Bears will return home to host Johnson C. Smith University for Senior Night and White Out on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m.
