SHAW DOWNS LIVINGSTONE 3-0 TO REMAIN UNBEATEN IN CIAA VOLLEYBALL ACTION

RALEIGH, N.C.  – The Shaw University Lady Bears volleyball team saw its winning streak rise to 12 straight matches as they defeated Livingstone College 3-0 to keep an unblemished record in conference play Monday inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

 

Shaw improves to 13-6 overall, 11-0 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and 5-0 in the Southern Division. Livingstone falls to 5-7 overall, 5-5 in the CIAA and 2-3 in the South.

 

The Lady Bears would outhit Livingstone with a hitting percentage of .341to .032. Senior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, US Virgin Islands) led Shaw with 11 kills followed by senior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) with eight. Senior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez led the way in assist with 26 while senior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) paced the Lady Bears with 23 digs.

 

During the first set, the Lady Bears raced out to a 3-0 lead. LC called its first timeout of the set trailing Shaw 5-0 after a service ace from Gonzalez.  The Lady Blue Bears trimmed at Shaw's lead by scoring three unanswered points before the Lady Bears pushed  its lead back up to five (12-7) as LC would call another timeout this time facing a 15-8 deficit. Shaw would go on to take a 20-11 lead before taking the set 25-12.

 

The Lady Bears started the second set like the first building a lead from the first serve (3-1). The Lady Blue Bears fought back to tie the set at 8-8 before taking a brief 13-12 lead but Shaw would regain the lead 16-13 and force a Livingstone timeout. Eight straight points from the Lady Bears extended its lead to 20-13. Shaw would see its lead dwindle to 22-19 before finishing off the set for the 25-21 win to take a 2-0 lead.

 

The third set would mirror the first two, as the Lady Bears jumped out 3-0 early on. Shaw then pushed its lead to 10-5. A kill from Klink would make it 15-7 in favor of the Lady Bears, forcing an LC timeout leading 17-7. Shaw continued to roll to take the third set 25-13 and the match 3-0.

 

Shaw returns the court on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Bluefield State for a nonconference tilt. First serve is slated for 2 p.m.
