PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team split two matches on Saturday with a 3-0 win against Lees-McRae and a 3-0 setback against Lenoir-Rhyne. The split puts Shaw at 2-6 overall while Lees-McRae stands 1-7 on the year and Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 3-0 to start the year.
Continuing competition at the UNC Pembroke Invitational, the early morning match featured the Lady Bears against the Bobcast of LMC. While Shaw hoped to continue its stellar performance into the afternoon, the Lady Bears couldn't outperform the Bears of L-R.
Senior's Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) and Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) both finished the day with 17 total kills each while junior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) finished with 14 kills. Senior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) amassed 37 total assists including 20 against Lees-McRae.
Defensively, senior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) collected 26 digs, including 17 stops in the setback to Lenoir-Rhyne.
Against the Bobcats, Shaw earned the 3-0 sweep by the scores of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-16. The Lady Bears produced a hitting percentage of .282 on 43 kills while holding LMC to .160 and just 28 kills.
In the nightcap versus Lenoir-Rhyne, Shaw suffered a 25-21 defeat in the first set, followed by a 25-23 edge in the second set and then hit a season-low .024 to fall 25-16 in the third set for the 3-0 decision.
The Lady Bears will look to get back to its winning ways when they begin Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) competition with the CIAA Round-Up hosted by Virginia State University on Sept. 8-9 in Petersburg, Va.
