LADY BEARS FALL TO WINSTON-SALEM STATE IN CIAA VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

PETERSBURG, Va. -  The Shaw University women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 defeat by Winston-Salem State University Sunday afternoon in the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Volleyball Championship at the VSU Multipurpose Center. The Rams won 26-24, 25-23 and 25-23.

The Lady Bears conclude their season 27-5 overall while the Rams stand 22-7 on the year.

For the contest, the Lady Bears registered a .147 hitting percentage compared to WSSU's .235 hitting.

Shaw capitalized on the Rams errors in the first set to take an early 4-0 lead but the after a Rams timeout, WSSU scored six of the next nine points to pull within one. The set would eventually tie twice until the Lady Bears took a four-point lead three times before the Rams scored three-straight to tie the set at 20-20.

Both teams exchanged points but the Rams would score the last two for the set win on a kill from Jasmine Smith, followed by an attack error on Shaw for the victory.

In the second set, the Lady Bears trailed 12-9 before scoring three-straight to tie the set at 12-all. After three more ties down the stretch, the Rams took a one-point advantage on a kill from Smith. The next possession was a miscue by Shaw that would give WSSU the 25-23 edge.

With a 2-0 deficit heading into the third, the Lady Bears have been in positions before this season where they've made a comeback to not only tie the sets but earn victories on late heroic's but it did not work out this time for Shaw as the Lady Bears were edged again in the third with a Rams kill and another error from Shaw that gave WSSU the 25-23 win and 3-0 sweep for the 2017 CIAA title.

Junior and All-CIAA Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) led the effort with 12 kills and five digs while junior and All-CIAA Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) added nine kills and three blocks. Junior and All-CIAA Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) recorded 25 assists in the loss.

Murphy and All-CIAA junior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) was named to the All-Tournament Team for Shaw.
