GOREE NAMED CIAA WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL COACH OF THE YEAR FOR THE THIRD-CONSECUTIVE YEAR

PETERSBURG, Va., -  The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), with its Volleyball Coaches Association, announces Shaw University Head Coach DiShondra Goree this season's CIAA Volleyball Coach of the Year.

Coach Goree earns her third consecutive CIAA Coach of the Year honor after leading her 2017 Bears to a Southern Division title, also their second-straight. The team marked a 25-4 overall record while going 15-1 in conference play and 9-1 in divisional play. The Bears' only loss versus conference opponents occurred in a match against the Broncos of Fayetteville State University (3-0).

Goree had six players named to the All-CIAA team, including first-team all-conference sophomore Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA), junior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC), junior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI), junior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) while junior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) and senior Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) both received second team all-conference

The successful regular season seeded Goree and the Bears No. 1 in the Southern Division for the 2017 CIAA Volleyball Championship. Shaw will open the championship bracket against the North's #4 Lincoln (Pa.) University on Friday, November 17 at 7:30 p.m. EST. The single elimination bracket will conclude with the championship match on Sunday, November 19 at 3:30 p.m. Live stats will be available for all championship contests. 

The 2017 CIAA Volleyball Championship will be played this weekend, November 17-19, on the campus of Virginia State University in VSU's Multipurpose Center. The event is open to the public.
