SHAW CONCLUDES REGULAR SEASON WITH SWEEP OF RIVAL SAINT AUGUSTINE’S

RALEIGH, N.C. – Three Lady Bears recorded nine kills apiece as the Shaw University women's volleyball team (25-4, 15-1 CIAA, 9-1 Southern Division) swept the visiting Lady Falcons of Saint Augustine's University (5-11, 5-11 CIAA, 2-8 Division) on Thursday evening from the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. The Lady Bears posted scores of 25-13, 25-15, and 25-17 to close out the regular season and secure their third-straight win in a row.

 

The match featured recognitions of two women's cross country runners and two women's volleyball seniors before the first serve. In addition, junior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) was presented with her 1,000th career kill ingraved ball as she surpassed the milestone Monday, Nov. 6 versus Faytteville State in Spaulding. 

 

Of the three players that charted nine kills each in the match was junior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) who added one dig while Murphy groomed five stops and three service aces and sophomore Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) posted one dig and three blocks.

 

Junior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) dished out a match-high 22 assists while junior Christine Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) handed out 13 dimes. Senior Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) tallied a match-high nine digs.

 

The Lady Bears will now await the seeding announcement from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) for the 2017 Volleyball Championships to be held in Petersburg, Va. The first match of the championship begins on Friday, Nov. 17. Shaw will automatically head into the tournament as the No. 1 seed from the South.
