SALISBURY, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball cruised to a 3-0 sweep of Livingstone College Thursday evening in their Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division opener. The Lady Bears defeated the Lady Blue Bears 25-9, 25-10 and 25-11 New Trent Gymnasium.
With the win, Shaw is now 11-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play, while LC slips to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the CIAA.
Juniors Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) and Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) finished with a match-high nine kills apiece. Junior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) Murphy added eight kills (8-of-13) and three blocks while sophomore Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) contributed seven kills. Junior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) recorded a match-high 23 assists, followed by sophomore Alexandra Masnica (Chicago, IL) with 12 passes.
In the opener, the Lady Bears got out to the races with a 12-4 lead sparked by four kills led from Wattley who recorded three in that particular run. Shaw ripped off 14 of the final 17 points to grab one-set advantage.
The second set saw the Lady Bears lead by as many as 11 points (15-4) midway before using an 8-0 spurt to claim the second set. Shaw hit 47-percent on17-of-30 attacks.
With a 11-3 lead in the third set, Shaw held LC to seven points for the remainder of the way as a kill by sophomore Amari Fletcher (Phoenix, AZ) gave the Lady Bears the set win and 3-0 victory.
Shaw will return to action Friday, Sept. 22 when they take on Lees McCrae in a nonconference tilt scheduled for 6 p.m. in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. Friday's contest will be tagged as "Family Night" for the Lady Bears.
