ATHENS, W, Va. – Sophomore Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) hauled in a match-high 11 kills to help lead the Shaw University women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep (25-13, 25-18, 25-15) over Salem International during the first day of the Concord Classic Tournament. The victory gave Shaw its fourth-straight win to start the season.
Junior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) chipped in nine kills and match-high five blocks while junior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) added eight kills, four service aces and eight digs. Junior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) handed out a match-high 21 assists and sophomore Alexandra Masnica (Chicago, IL) registered 10 assists.
Defensively, senior Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) recorded a team-best and match-high 16 digs in the win.
Shaw (4-0) took a 5-3 lead in the opening set. The Lady Tigers (2-4) would stick around to pull within one on two occasions but the Lady Bears scored 12 unanswered points to extend their lead 21-8 which would eventually lead to a 25-13 set win for Shaw.
After 15 ties in the second set, Shaw took control on a 5-1 spurt that gave the Lady Bears the (18-13) lead they would not relent to take the set 25-18.
The Lady Tigers led 5-2 over Shaw in the third set. A service error by SIU's Sophie Freilhofer gave the Lady Bears a 13-12 edge, following two kills from Moten and sophomore Amari Fletcher (Phoenix, AZ) down the stretch to give Shaw a three-point lead. Shaw scored 10-straight, including four miscues from SIU to put the game away, 25-15 for the sweep.
Rachel Hess led the efforts offensively for Salem International with nine kills and four digs.
Shaw will return to action Friday, Sept. 8 at 11 a.m. versus West Virginia Tech, followed by a contest with Ohio Valley at 3 p.m.
