PEMBROKE, N.C. – Senior libero Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) eclipsed the 1000-dig mark for her career tonight as the Shaw University women's volleyball team collected a pair of wins over Converse and UNC Pembroke Tuesday evening for the UNCP Tri-Match at the English E. Jones Center. With the wins, the Lady Bears improve to 3-0 overall while UNC Pembroke dropped to 1-5 overall and Converse closed out the day 1-5 on the year.

In the opening, the Valkyries jumped out to a 5-1 lead over Shaw before the Lady Bears went on a 4-1 run to hold a 6-5 advantage. Shaw scored 10-straight midway but Converse snapped the streak on a kill by Alexis Pitts to cut the deficit, 16-11. The Lady Bears would outscore the Valkryies 9-3 to win set one, 25-15.

Shaw led by as many as 15 to start the second set with a 20-5 frame but Converse would respond by scoring four unanswered points until the Lady Bears went on a 5-2 spurt to cruise to the set win.

With a 7-3 lead to start the third, Converse tied the contest at 8-8 on a kill from Pitts but that would be the closest the Valkyries would get for the remainder of the way as Shaw would never relinquish the lead for set win and 3-0 sweep.

Match 2:

Score: Shaw (3) | UNC Pembroke (1) | (21-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-19)

Shaw folded 25-21 in the first set after allowing UNCP to score 12 of its last 17 points despite the Lady Bears 16-13 lead midway. Shaw trailed by one to begin the second set but the Lady Bears went on a 4-0 run to hold a one-point lead over UNCP.

The Lady Bears held onto a three-point lead before grooming that advantage to seven-point stanza –their largest of the set as UNCP would get no closer than four.

Trailing 24-23 in the third set, Shaw ignited a comeback after scoring three-straight which led to the 26-24 win for the Lady Bears.

Tied twice, with the last tie showing the score 12-12, a kill by Klink led to a 5-1 run for Shaw as the Lady Bears held an 18-13 lead. SU would seal the deal on a kill by sophomore Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) and an error by UNCP.
