PEMBROKE, N.C. – Senior libero Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) eclipsed the 1000-dig mark for her career tonight as the Shaw University women's volleyball team collected a pair of wins over Converse and UNC Pembroke Tuesday evening for the UNCP Tri-Match at the English E. Jones Center. With the wins, the Lady Bears improve to 3-0 overall while UNC Pembroke dropped to 1-5 overall and Converse closed out the day 1-5 on the year.
Brooks, who entered today's contests with 975 digs through the first 85 matches of her career, recorded 25 digs against both Converse and UNCP in the victories.
Junior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) led the effort offensively, posting 26 total kills and 21 digs. She hauled in her first double-double on the season with 13 kills and 12 digs against UNCP. Junior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) dished out a total of 46 assists while junior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) combined for 18 kills total.

In the opening, the Valkyries jumped out to a 5-1 lead over Shaw before the Lady Bears went on a 4-1 run to hold a 6-5 advantage. Shaw scored 10-straight midway but Converse snapped the streak on a kill by Alexis Pitts to cut the deficit, 16-11. The Lady Bears would outscore the Valkryies 9-3 to win set one, 25-15.
Shaw led by as many as 15 to start the second set with a 20-5 frame but Converse would respond by scoring four unanswered points until the Lady Bears went on a 5-2 spurt to cruise to the set win.
With a 7-3 lead to start the third, Converse tied the contest at 8-8 on a kill from Pitts but that would be the closest the Valkyries would get for the remainder of the way as Shaw would never relinquish the lead for set win and 3-0 sweep.

Shaw folded 25-21 in the first set after allowing UNCP to score 12 of its last 17 points despite the Lady Bears 16-13 lead midway. Shaw trailed by one to begin the second set but the Lady Bears went on a 4-0 run to hold a one-point lead over UNCP.
The Lady Bears held onto a three-point lead before grooming that advantage to seven-point stanza –their largest of the set as UNCP would get no closer than four.
Trailing 24-23 in the third set, Shaw ignited a comeback after scoring three-straight which led to the 26-24 win for the Lady Bears.
Tied twice, with the last tie showing the score 12-12, a kill by Klink led to a 5-1 run for Shaw as the Lady Bears held an 18-13 lead. SU would seal the deal on a kill by sophomore Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) and an error by UNCP.

The Lady Bears will continue their road skid when they head to Athens, WV for the Concord Tournament that will feature Salem International, West Virginia Tech, Ohio Valley and host Concord on Sept. 7-9.
