RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University women's volleyball team opened the 2017 campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over the visiting Claflin University Lady Panthers with set scores of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-6. The win was the Lady Bears seventh straight win in C.C Spaulding Gymnasium dating back to last season.
The win improves the Lady Bears record to 1-0 while Claflin falls to 0-1 on the early season.
During the first set, Claflin jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before jumping out a 5-2 lead. The Lady Bears would shake off the slow start to trim their deficit to 6-5 which would also be their last one of the entire match. With the scored tied at 7-7, Shaw would then claim a 9-7 lead off back-to-back service aces. The set would again be deadlocked at 12-12 before Shaw ran out to a 17-12 lead forcing a Claflin to call a timeout.
The Lady Bears started the second set hot jumping out to a 4-1 lead with a kill from junior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI). After pushing their lead to 6-2, Claflin would respond with a run to trim the Lady Bears lead to 8-7. Shaw answered with a 5-0 run to push their lead to 13-7 with a forceful kill from junior Saraya Klink (Fuquay Varina, NC). Claflin would take a timeout after the Lady Bears ballooned to a 23-12 lead. Simpson's kill would seal the second set for Shaw by the mirrored score of 25-16.
Shaw would put out any chance of a letdown to rest, opening the third set to leads of 6-0, 10-0 and 14-1 before an error on the Lady Bears gave Claflin their first point of the third set. Clafin would take their second timeout of the set trailing Shaw 19-1. The Lady Panthers would run off a few points before the Lady Bears solidified the match with a 25-6 third set victory completing the sweep.
