PETERSBURG, Va. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team took down the Lady Lions of Lincoln University (Pa.) in three-straight sets 25-19, 25-14 and 25-13 on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the 2016 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Volleyball Championships.
The Lady Bears (20-7 overall) will face the winner of Winston-Salem State and Virginia State on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 5 p.m. in the VSU Multipurpose Center.
Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) led Shaw offensively with nine kills while Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX) and Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) netted eight kills apiece and Briana Wilson (Columbia, SC) tallied seven. Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) handed out a match-high 32 assists and 11 digs in the win.
Shaw pushed out an early 5-1 lead over the Lady Lions (7-23 overall) in the opening set. The Lady Bears led by five points until LU went on a 4-0 run to get within one (18-17). Shaw planted a 5-1 run to lead 23-19 before a kill by Moten and Wattley secured the 25-19 win.
Similar to the first set, Shaw groomed a 7-1 lead in the second frame sparked by a kill from Wilson. The Lady Bears took a 10-point lead twice with the last time at 14-24 before a kill by Olmeda-Gonzalez concluded the 25-14 win for Shaw.
Shaw and LU exchanged points early in the third set but Shaw pulled away with a 20-10 lead after taking advantage of the three miscues from the Lady Lions. A kill by Wattley and a service ace would give the Lady Bears the 25-13 win and 3-0 sweep.
