RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University women's volleyball team completed the season sweep of Johnson C. Smith University with a 3-0 victory with set scores of 25-7, 25-14 and 25-16. The Lady Bears also celebrated senior night honoring lone senior Briana Wilson (Columbia, SC) prior to the match.
The win improved the Lady Bears overall record to 19-7, 15-1 in conference action which is a new school best and a 9-1 mark in the Southern Division. JCSU falls to 4-18 overall and 2-14 in CIAA play.
The Lady Bears were led by sophomore Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) who finished the contest with 10 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore's Keveesha Wattley (St.Croix, VI) and Morghan Robinson (Anaheim, CA) followed with seven kills while Sophomore Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) led the way in the assist column with 29. Shaw hit for a .463 percentage overall for the match while JCSU hit just .147.
During the opening set, the Lady Bears forced an early JCSU timeout after taking a 4-0 lead. Shaw would then extend its lead to 9-0. JCSU would break the Lady Bears run at 10 straight points. The Lady Bears would then run off six more points before a service error made the score 16-2 in favor of Shaw. Shaw closed out the first set for a 25-7 win.
The second set was a mirror of the first with the Lady Bears jumping out to a big lead early forcing a JCSU timeout as Shaw led 8-2 to start. The Lady Bears lead would explode to as much as 18-4 before forcing another JCSU timeout. The Lady Bears finished the job with a 25-14 win in the second set to go ahead 2-0 in the match.
JCSU would strike first in the third set before three straight points from the Lady Bears made it 3-1 early. Shaw went up 11-5 before racing out to a 16-7 lead in route to a 25-16 victory for the 3-0 sweep.
As the 2016 CIAA Southern Division Champions, Shaw will now await the parings for the CIAA Tournament which will be held at Virginia State University on Friday, Nov. 18 through Sunday, Nov. 20.
